I signed up for a level 2 Chinese class today. Starting next semester. I am really looking forward to it :-) I skipped level 1 because I grew up in China till I was 8. Hope that was the right desicion.

Language attrition 9 months ago

I actually learnt Chinese and English simultaneously while growing up, and used to be fairly proficient at Chinese. Well. Guess which language is dominant now. I don’t use Chinese at all in everyday life, so unfortunately I’ve only retained a conversational grasp of the language. I actually feel quite shocked by the amazingly rapid rate at which I’ve lost my facility in Chinese – so I’m going to do something about it.

I decided on a whim last year to try to learn Chinese, and I was shocked at how far I managed to get only spending 10 minutes a day on my exercises. I’d like to expand on that this year, and learn more about speaking instead of concentrating on reading and writing all the time.

Don’t know how accurate it is, but it’s certainly fun!

Class has been going OK. It’s really just memorization, plus getting your work done/turned in, so it’s not too bad. I am learning more vocab though, which is good, although grammar is mostly just review of concepts I already internalized while young.

I’m not even sure if that’s correct, btw.

As a Chinese-American, I have a passing ability to speak Chinese, a fairly good ability to understand spoken Chinese, and negligible writing/reading skills. (According to my parents, I have the reading/writing skills of an elementary school student. And not like a 5th grader either, but someone of about 7 years old. Great.)

I’m taking Chinese in school right now, at level 2, so I should finish the basic series by Spring of next year.

My ultimate goal is to be able to (a) converse so fluently that people can’t tell I wasn’t born in China/Taiwan/etc, (b) read the newspaper and basic novels, and© write for business matters.

I started a Teach Yourself thingy sometime ago, but I kinda forgot about it after a while.
I definitely want to start again, though. From what I know so far, Chinese is pretty fun to learn :)
