Arveda intends to eat a lot today.
. . . and fabric softener, too!
How I did it: The most difficult part of making my own laundry detergent was obtaining the washing soda. I learned that some Kroger stores still carry it.
I used this formula:
1 bar Ivory soap, grated
1/2 cup Arm & Hammer Washing soda
1/2 cup 40 Mule Team borax
Use one tablespoon per regular load.
Don't forget to use your homemade fabric softener, too! Just pour 1/2 cup white vinegar in the rinse cycle.

i finally found a place that sells washing soda!
now all i need to do is get some borax and a 5 gallon bucket to mix everything in.
i planned on using slivers of used body soap i already had instead of using a new bar of soap…
so i will actually be saving even more money.
i can’t wait to make this stuff!
p.s. if anyone reads this and is wanting to make their own laundry detergent, do not substitute baking soda for washing soda. it’s not the same thing and it won’t get your clothing as clean!

i’m having a difficult time finding the arm & hammer washing soda required for the laundry detergent recipe.

Lauren W. busy mama!
A friend of mine tried to do this and had minimal success… I guess the stuff separated on her over night, and she for some reason thought that BLENDING it would solve the problem! Oh no! What a mess it was.
I’ve bought the washing soda for this, and am on the lookout for the naphtha (although will use Ivory if I have to) and the Borax. I have tea tree oil already, but might get another scent to add (like orange, as suggested… although my personal preference is lavendar). I dreamt last night that I was making it and it all got messed up.

I’m planning to use this recipe:

Just need to find a bucket to mix/store it in. I have some tea tree oil that I’ll use, not sure if I’ll add any other EO for fragrance (maybe something cheap from the co-op).
The site says that this costs about 1 cent per load—that’s awesome!! I would like to move towards using more basic, environmentally friendly, cost effective cleaners, and this seems like a good place to begin.
I couldn’t find the Fels Naptha so I substituted a bar of Walmart’s soap. I also couldn’t find washing soda so I used baking soda instead. The recipe was clear and easy to follow. The detergent was made quickly and I am very happy with it. It works great. I’m so glad I tried this.
