I studied here in 1994 at the university. I covered the city and surrounding palaces and nature preserves. The historic tourist areas are beautiful and safe. Was almost robbed at gunpoint in “off the beaten path” area. On a positive note, a few days tour is worth the trip. See the sites, including nearby palaces. Attend a ballet, symphony, possibly an opera, it is all worth.
A true treasure, but a city with problems you find anywhere. Enjoy!
You will see so much more than using the ship excursions and it could cost you less, you can see whatever you want to see (as far as spots to visit and rooms/paintings/whatever within those spots) and if you have a nice driver and guide, even get to pull over and take photos along your drive wherever you want.
Just be careful about exchange rates and cost. We were quoted and old exchange rate and the dollar went down and our cost went up $150 (over 10% of the total cost for the two day private tour for three). Also be ready to treat the driver and guide to lunch both days as unlike anywhere else I’ve traveled, this seems expected there (or maybe it’s just expected anywhere if you have a private tour; this was our first time trying a private tour, so I’m not sure).
My family had lived there four 4 year and I could be born in St Petersburg ))) My friends told me such amazing things about this city…So I hope this summer I’ll visit this city!!!
I went to St. Petersburg with a theatre class last summer and it was one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. The city is beautiful, simply walking to the metro station is overwhelming. This is definately one of my favorite places in the world, if you have the opportunity to do it, please grab it and run with it!
Stayed there a month last year, going back this year. Definitely go there in the summer. It is one of the most gorgeous cities on earth. Plus you can take overnight rail to other places nearby like Moscow, Helsinki etc. Don’t just go to the touristy spots (Hermitage, etc.) walk around different parts of the city, take the subway here and there, soak it in. It’s so cool.
