I found a purpose 12 months ago

I would love to become a speech therapist.
I am currently completing General Ed classes at a Community College. I am determined to follow the path to this noble profession, as it suits my personality and capabilities.

Please let me know what is needed. Thanks! :)

Application 12 months ago

Have applied for the university now. The program require good grades, mine are, but my chances of getting in is still just 50/50. Don’t like those odds.

Health care 15 months ago

I had just graduated from upper secondary school and I needed a job. So I decided to get some experience within health care. I managed to get a job very quickly at an elderly centre for people suffering from alzheimer’s and dementia.

It was tough in the beginning, but now I never want to work with anything else than health care. You do something good ever day and working with people is extremely good for your own development. I feel like a completely different person just after this few weeks, a better person.

I do believe that I have found a mission in my life. I also like to believe that I am naturally talented in this area. Some of my work colleagues thought that I had worked with this for several years because of my good treatment. But what chocked me the most was when the “office’s” most critical person said that I was “insanely skilful”. I might not be that bad after all…

Why? 17 months ago

-Language fascinates me – It has always been one of my favourite subjects in school. The feeling of understanding in as many ways as possible is amazing. Being a speech therapist is about the ability of getting yourself understood as good as possible.

-Music is my life and I see the voice as just another instrument to create beautiful sounds, yes, every voice is beautiful and unique. A speech therapist is an expert of that instrument.

-I want to help people, simply change someone’s life for the better every day. I have always felt myself drawn to work at a hospital in some way.

-It is the missing piece in my life. I have always been an easy learner. I have learnt to play music, do paintings, do sports, got very good grades in school but I have always been a terribly bad speaker. I have no power in my voice but it is mostly because I have been so extremely shy in my past. I guess that becoming a speech therapist would be a sort of therapy as well. If I make it I get to help others that also has communication problems and perhaps form time to time be able to say – I know how you feel without lying.

Going Back to School.... 2 years ago

Hi… I am 32 and I have decided after being out of the work force for the last 5 years (became a mommie) that I want to start a new career. I have an associates in business admin. and I would like to go t school again to become a speech therpist or any field involving early intervention for children with disabilities. I obviously don’t have years and years to go to school. Anyone have any suggestions or advice on which avenue I should go.

Started my new placement today in a paediatric clinic. I feel as though I’m now more able to connect the theory to the client. This goal (although still a long way away from being accomplished) is something I can now visualise much more easily.

I’m in second year of my degree course.

sherrily asks, “I'm a undergrad student in the US. I would like to become a speech therapist. I've looked all over the web and most information is regarding the UK. Can anyone tell me about doing this in the US? What is grad school like? What master degree should I get?”
