Turkish delight and other forms of morality 3 years ago

I don’t remember if I ever read the books, but I remember the story from some old movie or TV series.

I tell a lie… I hadn’t remembered the whole story, only the fact that you could walk into this magical wardrobe and come out into the snowy forest, which was amazing!, and then there was this ice queen who was supposed to be evil but gave out the most amazing turkish delight, and of course you would sell out your family for turkish delight, who wouldn’t? then there was a lion in there somewhere, and they were on some kind of trip to the countryside.

Watching the more recent movie I learnt that the trip to the countryside was actually as evacuees from WW2, which had a special interest for me because my dad was evacuated from east london at that time. he would have been just a few years younger than the kids in this story.

I liked the movie. It might not have been earth shattering but it’s just a good little story, and teaches you that perhaps, in the end, it’s actually not such a good idea to sell out your siblings for turkish delight, and that I shouldnt’ be eating it anyway now that I have diabetes.

Again, another goal that feels really good to tick off. I loved this book as a child and the story has always stayed with me. And I think it’s such a wonderful story – simple in the way it’s told, but really effective. I can also still remember watching the original BBC make of this film. Oh, how technology has changed throughout these couple of years! It’s amazing how far it’s all come really. Seeing this movie has also inspired me to read all the Chronicles. But that’s another 43things.com goal for another time ;)

Went today 3 years ago

I wasnt even enthusiastic about going, but my Mom and Brother wanted to take my kids so I went along. I just wasnt in the mood, and didnt think my five year old would be able to sit through it. I was totally glad I went! Beautiful movie. I love movies that the kids and I can both enjoy. I even teared up a bit, and my 11 year old son did too, though he is denying it now. I think I am going to go get this book tomorrow “Finding God in Narnia”. I am curious now to know more.

Completely worth it! 3 years ago

This was a wonderful movie. I’ve been wanting to see it as much as I’ve been wanting to read it. Seeing the movie reconfirmed my need to read the book.

Very moving in parts, I found myself tearing up at a few spots. I’m not usually sentimental either. I loved seeing the way the children got to Narnia and I wish I too, could visit. I definitely want to see the world and see if I could find a place like it. I loved the snow and the different creatures. I’m into all that mystical sort of stuff!

So a definite must see, and I want to own when it comes out. So go see it!

Narnia's Amazing World 3 years ago

I saw “The Chronicles of Narnia (The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe)”, last night and I totally loved it. It ws exciting, and it made me want to read Narnia again. I haven’t read the book since I was about eight or nine, but it was a wonderful read then, and the movie was a great watch.

Tilda Swinton was, as usual icily wonderful and completely embodied the Witch, and again confirms why I will watch her in anything, and I’ve seen quite a lot of her work. She’s consistently good, and one of the finest actresses of her generation.

The story was engaging, and in retrospect, although Narnia is it’s own world onto itself, I see how CS Lewis and Tolkien were cronies.

The performances by the four young siblings was marvellous and I shall pay attention to their faces to see if they produce anything else as well turned.

Another aspect of the film I found interesting, is the talk I hear about the Christian iconography in the film. I find this kind of odd, since before Jesus/Yashua came along, there were more than a dozen ‘crucified’ and ‘resurrected’ deities across the world. So how they seem to overlay their own agenda over the story is interesting.

The whole story is about magic, and ‘deep magic’ at that, right? And don’t ‘true Christians’ abhor such things? It’s just interesting. Maybe CS Lewis was a Christian and a devout one, but the great concept of sacrifice and reincarnation is not original to Jesus Christianity. Oh if we could only read our human history!

Alright, enough digression. This was a wonderful film. Great for kids, great for teens, great for all the family. Go out and watch and enjoy.

By the way, although some of the special effects were marvelous, some of them were hokey as shit, but the overall story was so transporting, you kind of only notice it on multiple watchings or keen eyed observation. Don’t bother, be transported. It’s worth it.
