I’m just not passionate enough about this. I’ve discovered that I’m more interested in combining my interests into one thing that I love. 3 years ago
hey guys, i’m divided between majoring in Nursing or Graphic Design. I like GDesign better but i think Nursing has higher employability. I was considering majoring in GDesign, but i’ve got concerns when it comes to getting a job. I need some wise advice cos i’ll be using mostly loans to pay for my college degree and want to be able to repay them by getting a decent and stable job that i can do till i die! Opinions please! 3 years ago
I just got my BFA, so the next step is finding a freaking job. I’m doing the whole freelance thing, but the work I’ve been getting isn’t anywhere close to rewarding.
Where to go to find said job is another thing altogether, but one thing at a time I guess. 3 years ago
finished my degree 4 months ago!!!
was working in retail to earn money for an overseas trip, yet went to thailand, came back, and am pretty much still working full time! get me the hell out of retail and into my dream career! 3 years ago
I got a freelance job suddenly. I guess I will do freelance jobs until I find a full-time graphic designer position. 4 years ago
I was offered a part time position (25 to 30 hours a week) at a design firm. My job is mostly administrative, with design projects going on when I am not answering phones, organizing deadlines, and confirming prices. I don’t know how well I am going to do on the administrative end, but I hope to quickly excel at this job. :) 4 years ago
I don’t want to be a graphic designer anymore, but I already have a degree for it…
I think I need to at least give it a try. So hopefully by the end of this month I’ll have my portfolio together and I’ll start putting myself out there. 4 years ago
Ok, instead of chnaging this, I’m throwing out this goal and replacing it with something that combines all the possibilities. My new goal will be “Get a job I can love.” 5 years ago
I just changed this goal from “get a job in graphic design” to “get a job that makes me happy” and it’s cheating, because 33 people have cheered me on getting a job in graphic design, and now I’m pretty much starting a new goal with 33 stolen cheers… but it’s basically the same goal to me. Graphic design might make me happy… something else might make me happier… and I should take advantage of the opportunity to choose something that makes me happy instead of wasting my time pining over something that didn’t work that I’m too stubborn to give up… does this sound pessimistic?
How’s this – I can do anything now… so if I get a real job that isn’t what I origionally went after, that’s ok too, as long as I love doing it. And… it isn’t nice to say that retail is not real, because it’s just as much a job as anything, but I’m not counting that for me, because I hate it so much. 5 years ago
Freelance is such a pain in the arse. 5 years ago
It looks bad – I do freelance work for next to nothing, and now, instead of going to look for a company to work for, I’ve decided to go to school. I have the opportunity, so I might as well take it. I’m getting back together with my first love: architectural drafting. I took some classes way back when, so I have a little bit of knowledge already. Not that my graphics degree will go to waste – if I hadn’t gone to tech school, I would not know the first thing about computers, and that’s just for starters.
I am excited to be going back to school, but I’m not taking this goal off of my list. I still want better work in my field. 5 years ago
I actually have a resume and a business card that I can be proud of now! Time to get an online portfolio! 5 years ago
So, I have been getting help with my portfolio and stuff. This one guy is a graphic designer, and he said that I should be careful about my portfolio leaning too heavily on illustration work, unless I just want to get jobs in illustration or photo processing. He said that my illustrations were good though.
I told him, that actually sounds ideal, since my real passion is in photo processing, and I do a lot of artwork just for fun. Then, he said that I should go for it then, but I have to expect to be doing freelance work if that is my choice. People don’t hire full time illustrators.
I think it’s time I started doing exactly what I know I am good at. Going freelance is really tough, especially when I have no idea how much payment to ask for, but maybe I can get help with that too. If I can get enough projects at a time, I should have enough money to get by, and I’ll be building up my portfolio for more work.
He said he will also help me with business cards. I’ve been careful to be vary positive in everything I say and do when asking people for help. I think it’s working. Maybe in a few years, I will be the one helping other people! 5 years ago
I started writing cover letters. I have written several, and they get better each time. I just threw out all of the conflicting rules that I read about online and contacted my inner business girl. I have always been able to write well – I just lacked confidence. I am more determined than ever now, so I’m forcing myself out of this cage of fear. Did I just say cage of fear? Well… it fit. 5 years ago
ok, I’ve sent in my resume for jobs, but this latest one… I really, really want this one. Eeeeeeeeeeee! How can I make sure I get it?! 5 years ago
this time, I’m taking another road. Yes. I know a guy who’s married to a woman who works for a company, and I think I know the owner… so. Maybe. 5 years ago
Should a cover letter for a graphic design job seem artistic and personal, or staunch and professional? 6 years ago
Is it better to wait until I'm ready with business cards, references, and an online portfolio before I send out resumes, or should I just send them in the moment I see an opportunity? 6 years ago
So I have this portfolio, and it’s a pretty good portfolio! i just don’t have the interviews, and the one guy, well that’s not going to work out. He can’t get me a job.
Well, today I worked on a cover letter. It’s not bad. The thing I’ve been doing wrong is worrying that I would get work that was above my head, and I’d suck, and my life would be over. Oh, how I should have taken an internship a year ago. The thing I can do right: Look at entry level jobs. Those shouldn’t be intimidating to someone with a degree. 6 years ago
I was getting worried because I had not heard from the guy who knew the other guy, but I talked to him today and he said the other guy was still there and willing to help. Finally I got something close to some contact info… so… I guess this is ok.
Also, made another contact, or at least i will. Just need to work up the nerve to make a call. What do I say when I call? Hi, I heard you were in the same feild and… and? And I just thought… I should… call?
Oh, oh, I thirst for a more challenging way to spend my time. I need this career. 6 years ago
First of all, I have a portfolio, and I have an associates degree. That’s good, right? But here are my problems:
1. I can’t get a decent reference letter. One guy said he would love to be a reference, but he doesn’t write, and he needs me to write it for him. I don’t know how to write a reference letter. One guy wrote me one, but it was long and crazy, and I can’t even begin to know where to cut it down to make it look good. One guy used my work, insisted that I had done it wrong anyway, and refused to pay me. I’m running out of guys, and still no letter.
2. I don’t know how to write a good cover letter. We never went over that in school, and I’ve never done it before. I’ve been to sites that talk about it, but they all give conflicting information.
3. I’m good enough to get a job. I know I am, but I don’t have any more experience than someone just coming out of school, although I’ve been out for three years. I had to help out my family, but that doesn’t give me any edge.
I need help. I don’t know where to go for it. 6 years ago
is definitly going to help me get a job, ‘cause I keep jumping up and down and saying “gimme gimme gimme! Look at this portfolio! look at this experience! Gimme a job!” And he hasn’t run away, so I think he will do it. It would just be an entry level job, and that’s all I need. I need a foot in the door. I came all this way to build a career, and that’s what I’m going to do. 6 years ago
who knows a guy, and the guy he knows just may give me a job knock on wood, and I need it, because times are tough, my budget is tight, and my ego is shrinking daily. It was already pretty shriveled to tell you the truth. It’s hard to have confidence when you’ve been living in a cave. I should know.
... But dammit! Deep down, I know I’m good. I have a portfolio. I have a resume. I have people skills.
In the words of Jules from Pulp Fiction, “I’m going. That’s all there is to it.” 6 years ago
Because I graduated almost three years ago, and I have not even made an attempt to get a job… But in my defence: I’ve been living with my mom, taking care of her needs, and I had to work close by so that I could run home in case of an emergency. Now that my sister is back for college and has taken my place, and I am in a new city… time for me to get moving! 6 years ago
I will be finishing school next thursday. Very excited and i’m trying to obtain a career in Graphic design. 6 years ago
