You’d think that a place with a relatively prominent university, the capitol, and a pretty good hospital system would have more, but it has just parking, riots, and football.
How I did it: I visited several cities before deciding on my new home. All I knew at the time was that I hated the snow, and wanted to get the heck out of Michigan! Once I finally settled on a new home, I began building my network there (before actually moving). I contacted employment recruiters, joined meetup groups, and reached out to family in the area. Once I was ready to move, I had already made some quality contacts in the area.
Lessons & tips: Eliminate as much junk as possible before moving. -When moving across state lines, most moving companies will charge you by the weight of your load (at least they did at the time I moved). So my motto while packing was "the more you take, the more you pay!" That made it pretty easy to eliminate the truly non-essential.
-Try to build your network in your new city before moving. This will help ease the transition for you.

I used to like this place, but my life has been slowly going downhill. I’m packing my bags and leaving before this state goes bankrupt. I just have to get my bachelor’s degree at MSU.

still here… for another winter… it’s always so hard to move once the weather gets cold and bad. i really want to move away from this place and i feel that the only way to do it is with good planning. forbid i become one of those people who moves away and unsuccessfully moves back when it doesn’t work out.

Growing up in Western Michigan, I felt stifled and dreamed of living somewhere with more sunshine, more opportunities, and more open-mindedness (especially toward women). I moved away in ‘89 and have been MUCH happier in Houston. I still visit MI once a year, and I can (now) appreciate the things that make it special. Western Michigan has a lot of beauty and a lot of wonderful people… and it’s come a loooooong way since I left… but it’s just not “me”.

I finally made the move. I have yet to start my full life in Oklahoma but I’m feeling pretty good about it, and I figure if it doesn’t work out, I still have 48 states to try….
