I can identify The Big Dipper and Polaris no problem.
When i was in Key Largo our guide showed us..Orion, Canus Major and Minor, The Bear, The Gemini Twins and Mars
but i cant recall where any of those are
HA Rey’s book arrived just the other day. It truly is a lovely little work. I’ve read through it now, and can identify quite a large number of constellations from the illustrations. Unfortunately, the annual week of Irish sunshine just ended.. and this overcast, dull weather hasn’t allowed me to see any real stars.
Step one taken, ordered HA Rey’s “Stars: A new way to see them” from Amazon. He was the guy who wrote the curious george series and he seems to have written the classic text on star gazing for the interested layman.
There are too many things going on and too much interesting stuff to learn. I have no time for constellations. Theyt are just dots in the sky after all! Since I don’t believe in astrology or anything like that, they wouldn’t help me, so I give up.
There is a great interactive website that teaches you about a couple of stars and constellations vist it at http://www.quietbay.net/Science/astronomy/nightsky/
up at the sky at night. I just recently bought a calendar to help me learn more, though my favorite will always be Orion.
I’m learning the constellations inside, but need to spend more time outside. It will be hard for a while, but I want to plan a camping trip.
I amn’t planning to do anything about this until I (hopefully) go to Shetland in August, so for now I’ll replace it with something I should be working on right now.
