I have raced on and off for the last 30 years. Motocross as a kid, roadracing at 18, then 30, now I am 39 and want to do it again. Where do I find the time though?

When I think of a racebike, I think motoGP 200mph, knee on the ground flat out roadracing.
Then I look at my budget.
Then I look at my skills.
So a couple friends got together $1,000 to get a race prepped YSR 50, and I’ve gotten it out for a practice run and tune session at the local cart track. It’ll still do 40, which is plenty fast on a go-kart track, and I’ve finally got the knees of my leathers properly scuffed. My bikes #13, and come february 15th I’ll have my first race.
It’s not a full size bike, it’s not even as big as a 125 GP, but it’s not a pocket bike either. a real person can ride it, and the skills translate directly from larger bikes (my commuter is an SV650)
on the flip side, it’s 7 hp, so you really learn to carry corner speed and get smooth.
if anyone else in the Southern California area is interested in racing on the real-cheap, check out the CMRRA

- Get a good set of leathers, first of all. I want to order a custom suit, probably from Syed Leathers or Barnicle Bill’s Racing Leathers.
- Get my rear shock revalved and put some cartrige forks up front.
- Finish paying off my commuter bike.
- Finish college so I can get a job paying enough for me to be able to afford to do some track days.
- Some other stuff too.
