Technically, I learned to knit when I was 6, so I feel a little guilty seeing “Congratulations! You’ve finished learn to knit scarves” at the top of the page.

The reason I’ve added it to my list is that I’ve started doing it again after all these centuries. The thing that shocked me was first, that I actually remembered how to do it, and secondly that knitting is actually considered cool now. (I thought I noticed a lot of knitting blogs by young and funkies!) I even read an article today about all these stressed out corporate New York guys getting together to for Friday night knitting. One of them was quoted as saying that he’d tried meditation as a relaxation technique, but it just wasn’t productive enough.

Life never ceases to dish up the unexpected! Sometimes one simply must submit to the zeitgeist.

Oh, yeah. Many. 3 years ago

Knitting rocks. And scarves are very practical. They keep you warm or can be used in emergency rescue situations if you need to escape from a castle turret or as a tourniquet if you are harmed in a sword fight.

I did it! 3 years ago

my grandma tried toteach me to knit when I was a kid but I never managed it.I saw beautiful sparkly purple, eyelash yarn and decided to try again.I got the instructions from the website where I bought the wool.I knitted it just in plain garter stich which was easy -casting on and off was a bit more challenging.Anyway, I’m really pleased with the result -it’s long and skinny, soft and fuzzy and all my own work.think I will do some more before I try to knit anything harder:)

...now my mom can have hers back... 4 years ago

I was shopping last week and I found the most perfect color of yarn that matches my winter hat. So I bought it and two sets of needles. I found instrustions on the yarns manufacturers website (www.lionbrand.com) on how to knit and two laters I was done!!! I went a little overboard on that fringe but it looks good. Now my mom can have her scarf back (since I have had it for three years).

I have done all that... 4 years ago

I have made a scarf! Now I am making one with this veeeeery fluffy soft yarn and it’s quite nice.

knitting is addictive 4 years ago

sooo worth it.
I learned to knit last year – very worth it. I have done a straight scarf, but became quicly bored – so have moved on to triangle scarves and scarves with fun embellishments like ruffles and fancy yarns.

I highly recommend it!

This is a great way to start knitting. 4 years ago

All you really need to know to make the most easy scarf is how to ‘cast on’ (put the stitches on the needle), ‘cast off’ (finish the scarf so it doesn’t pull back) and how to do plain stitching. (There are two types of basic stitches, plain and purl. If you can do both you can make a more complicated scarf that is smooth on one side. If you only know plain, you can still do a simple scarf)

Simply cast on the stitches you want – the more stitches, the fatter the wool and the larger the needles the bigger it will be, so I would say between 100-200 if you are on fairly fat wool and needles.

Then keep knitting the plain rows (or plain and purl rows alternatively) until the scarf is long enough for you. Then cast off.

Once you start getting the basics, you can move on to so many other things: making jumpers and cardigans, knitting thick socks for the winter, making baby clothes, knitting shawls for posh occasions, you name it.
