I was so scared to move back to Charleston after college, but it has been nothing but the best for me and my husband. I see my parents every week and I think of them now as Friends instead of as Parents. I seek them out when I want to hang out with someone. And it is good.
How to spend more time talking to my parents
How I did it: i started partying less and sending more time listening to my family, and before we knew it, we were all close again! what i learned, is that they are family and they are pretty much forced tobe with you for life, so its thats how its going to be, you might as well try the besty you can to salvage these relationships. were all humans and we all need love and we shouldnt judge our families because they arent like the ones on tv, or like youre friends that have always had really good relationships with their family. anyone can do it if they really try and just be honest. trust me, my family is crazy, but something always bonds us together. it really just takes a lot of dedicationfrom everyone.
Lessons & tips: spend as much time as you can at home. realize these are the only people that will always be there for you. accept them for who they are --its not like you can trade them off! once they realize they can trust you again, they can trust you and listen to you and the bond makes itsself! also, dont think that just because they are your family, they are forced to love you unconditionally. you should reciprocate that love: show it, tell them, respect them. they are people, too and you can easily hurt them even if you dont intend to.
