Michael R. is returning to Kansas City
Not knowing when we might get fuel again, short errands were done by walking and driving was reserved for the commute.
How I did it:
Lessons & tips: Add a little at a time. As weight decreases and health improves,it becomes easier to do more, which further decreases weight and further improves condition.
Resources: Weight Watchers

I can’t justify driving to the store when it’s just around the block. Unless, of course, it’s raining cats and dogs or if I have to buy more items than I can reasonably carry back to my apartment. I’ve seen those cute folding grocery carts and I am definitely going to invest in something like that.
My son’s elementary school is about a mile up the road from our apartment and at 8 years old, I think it would be good for him to start developing healthy activities that we can do everyday together..
I will begin walking to work. It’s a short trip and one that will do me a world of good. I’ll plan on three days (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday). I have lunch plans on Friday, so I may need to drive then. And I’m still not sure if I want to work on Wednesday.
I think i’m also going to walk to the grocery store tomorrow. Maybe the movies, too.
I lost 20 pounds by doing this.
Now that it’s not -30 with the wind chill at home, I can walk. Hooray!!!
kitfyre is sleeping.
I can’t even do this, since I now work 50 miles from where I live.
I moved a few years back from Garden State to Emerald City. Long story short, I decided not to have a car when I moved after crashing 2 cars in just about same number of weeks. Thought I might cut down on insurance, gas, parking in downtown if I go carless instead.
What had make the move was the fact that my office was 10-15 minutes walk from my condo, and there was an option to have shared cars available through Flexcar (www.flexcar.com).
Overall, for over 2 years I walked all over the city and was impressed with what one often ignores when driving. The sound, smell, people, signs – call it a sensual experience. Good excercise, lean on your pocket and I bet you will find something new just walking around.
Go for it…
I’m going to have to give this one up – not because I want to give up but it’s just not feasible when you’re living in suburbia. I’ll concentrate on the exercise part, not the walking to a specific destination part.
forget walking outside… I don’t like to take the kids to the mall (too many distractions and I just ending up strolling along anyway). I suppose since I’m working from home now, I do drive less. So this goal is half-accomplished. The walk more… hmm.. I think I’m going to have to use the treadmill at the rec center more to substitute.
