... I met a guy who does MMA, and the place he works out at is less than half the price of the other place. If I follow up, I may be able to begin a new stage in my life as a martial artist.

... I looked for a gym that teaches MMA, but it was too expensive.

I thought fighting was something you were supposed to learn in someone’s garage, but apparently it’s big business now.

Among my old papers, I found a small article from ESPN magazine about the Mecca of MMA, run by Steve Miletich. They talked about how hard it is physically, and I realized this would be my motivation for getting back in shape.

Yesterday, I biked home in the rain and cold and wind. I thought, ‘this is nothing compared to what I need to do to be a MMA fighter.’

    That got me through it.

I think this would be a good step in my education as a martial artist. At the moment, I’m far too theoretical and not athletically inclined enough.

I have never been a fan of boxing, wrestling, karate or taekwando matches etc…but after watching Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) which is as close to a real fight with no rules as you can get, i decided it was the most exciting sport on the face of the earth. Why? Because it is absolutely honest and truthful – no one has an advantage because of the rules, and any shortcoming any fighter has, whether it is fitness, strength, technique or heart, is brutally exposed. Probably the most exciting moments are when the “little guy” beats the bigger guy through sheer technique and guile, as Royce Gracie did in the very first matches.

So why do i want to contend in one? Because i have no idea how i would do, and i want to know how i would cope. i don’t really like fighting per se, or violence as a rule, but i don’t really categorise this as violence. I see it more like a chess match using nothing but the muscles, brains and spirit that God gave you.
