I’ve been doing a lot of research on people who are stockpiling in the case of an emergency, and what they are doing to prepare themselves. Here’s what I hope to accomplish this year:
-Have a minimum of 50litres of bottled water stored at all time (33bottles of 1,5L Dasani)
-store 100lbs of non-perishable foods
-make a kit in my storage room of all of the essentials I could need and can’t make.. including can opener, matches/lighters, sewing kits, flash light, extra batteries, battery operated radio, whistle, utility knife, toothpaste, extra toothbrushes, shampoo, etc.. (really great website with list found at http://www.getreadyforflu.org/clocksstocks/stockpilingchecklist.pdf ) 1 month ago

I’ve had this as a 43Thing for a while but it wasn’t until last week that I realized how important it was. I live in Austin, Texas and in Bastrop, about 15 miles east of us they had a fire that destroyed over 700 homes. People lost everything. It made me think that in the event of a fire, tornado, or whatever, I wouldn’t really have anything ready to go.
A big problem that people had was during the evacuation they shut down a lot of the gas stations, so people who didn’t have enough gas in their cars to get out of Bastrop had to rely on police officers to give them a gallon of gas or two.
As a part of being prepared for an emergency, I’m going to start always keeping my car at least half full of gas.
I also intend to do some cleaning this weekend and find my birth certificate, my high school diploma, my renters insurance agreement.. basically all of my important paperwork and get it all in one place so that in the event something were to happen, I could just grab it and go. I don’t have a lot of money to spend getting prepared, but at some point I’d like to buy a fireproof safe to put these belongings in. 4 months ago
