a few tips:
- if you’re looking to start playing soccer try a rec team, they usually have listings in the newspapers or try sports facilities (ask the desk or bulliten boards are big on posting for open spots on teams) ** rec teams are good if you’re just starting out because most of the time you won’t be the only player new to the game and they go over the basics. It’s really fun and non-competitive
- if you want competitive look to get on a select team where you have to try out. (TRy to get some experience in the game first though because the select teams and the players on them will be more judgemental of your skill and won’t be going over all the basics because chances are everyone else will already have learned them)
- most importantly DONT BE DISCOURAGED and KEEP AT IT because chances are you’ll have a ton of FUN :D

Gonna Join JV 18 months ago

Right now the seasons almsot starting and I decided to join an organized sport and soccers the only one left for the year. I’m in 11th grade, in pretty good shape, (miles about 5 1/2-6 1/2 minutes) I run a 5 mile course about 2-3 times a week. Only problem is I’ve never practiced soccer, been on a soccer team, or done anything related to soccer except play with my friends a little bit. Everyone’s been doing pre-season soccer so I’m probably going to suck alot in comparison when I join. I’m going to try to keep a positive attitude, hope that the coach and the team dont rag on me too much for being so poor at playing, and hopefully by the end after a little practice I’ll have a little bit of skill and will be an overall better player then I was when I started.

Never got a chance to play sports growing up – my undergrad made sports facilities available only to boys and so only watched my male friends enviously when they played soccer. Just moved to NYC and now I want my chance – any resources, encouragement is very appreciated!

Such a Great Sport! 2 years ago

Soccer is a really good sport to get into I am hooked. There is just a lot of basics to it and all they are:

1. When passing use the inside of your foot, NOT your TOES
2. kick the ball at the middle not at the bottom unless you want it to go in the air really high
3. Avoid using your forehead to stop the ball, It will cause a major headache, Try using your head where the hairline starts
4. Push chest out when stopping ball it will actually hurt less
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY!!!!......

5. HAVE FUN!!!!!! Cause that is what soccer is all about!

Made a few calls with no luck on finding either lessons or a non-competitive team. Sent email to athletic director at one of the local colleges that has a really good soccer team.

Soccer 2 years ago

I did not grow up during the soccer phenomenon that gripped kids about ten years ago. We had a soccer team, but those girls were rough. I was more about baton twirling, dance and cheerleading.

But after attending years of my cousin’s soccer matches, I came to realize, those girls are in shape! So, I want to try soccer.

I found out a couple days ago that a friend is also interested in finding a non-competitive team. She used to play soccer and would like to get back into it. So, I started searching online and will be making some calls tomorrow.

First Tournament! 2 years ago

The time has come and gone… and we lost every game!

I was a forward (blegh!) and had three shots on goal. Unfortunately, none of them went in. I’m only semi-terrible now (...) and I’m quickly improving. By next year, I might be pretty good. Or not.

Whatever. It was fun.

I started playing Foreign Language Intramurals – our foreign language clubs each have soccer teams. I don’t really know why, but they do. Anyway, I’m now number 11 for ITALIA! I’ll consider this goal “completed” after our first tournament, I guess.
