The countdown.
At least 47.5 miles over six days, with a lot of altitude changes, all over 7,000 ft.
The new boots are broken in.
Need to buy a few more things and prepare for our absence.
High Sierra Camps! Right after Labor Day!
I lotteried for meals only this year and got in. I didn’t think it was worth the extra money to stay in tent cabins with strangers, so I am going save nearly a thousand and sleep in a tent with my wife. Sure, we are going to have to carry the tent and sleeping bags, but it aint nothing I can’t handle. The kids are staying home.
So we are doing the five night loop and we don’t have to carry food, and more importantly, the bear cannister. The main thing is that I am now forced to do it, I am committed.
I finally submitted an application for the High Sierra Camp loop this year. It is the easy way, they feed you give you a spot in a tent so you can travel light. Problem is that it is always over-applied such that if you do get in, you should consider it a once in a lifetime experience. We got the “unfortunately” letter yesterday, Oh well, my wife is short on vacation days this year anyway.
An old friend is leaving town and his last weekend here is this weekend. I can always go camping next week or the week after. My friend is leaving and most likely not coming back.
San Francisco is the place where people leave. I have so few friends here, it is ridiculous.
The equipment is essential at all times but a hundred times more so in the winter.
I went through the Wilderness Travel Course. Snow camping in the High Sierras is something that they will make you do. It’s hard! Definitely take the class first.
