Three harnesses coming up! 21 months ago

I got three new kittens. They are approaching six weeks of age. My husband and I knew from the start we wanted to do this. We got them 5 days ago, so I just started looking out how young its ok to start this training. Guess now is the time!!! I’ll keep you updated on how it goes!!

Sophie is doing really well at this. She doesn’t run from the harness or try to escape from it (at least not very often) and she really likes going outside. Sometimes she even goes walking and leads me around the apartment complex. She’s an indoor kitty by training, so I don’t expect her to be walked like a dog-too many people or other creatures around freak her out-but she has learned to do enough to make both of us happy.

Not as difficult as it sounds! 2 years ago

I began walking my cat on a leash when she was about six weeks old after reading Siamese cats can be leash-trained. Now I can walk her in the park every day! She is about four months old and still struggles with me when I put the harness on, but after it is on she is fine. She is only part Siamese, so I imagine it can be done with other types of cats.

Starting my kitten early 2 years ago

I have a 6 week old kitten that I want to train to walk on a leash. We lived at the beach for 4 months with some of our cats and I wished then that I could take them on the beach with us but I didn’t try.

I am going to purchase a harness in two weeks.

I read some tricks online…These were all done over the course of a couple weeks, a few days for each step.
1. leave the harness and leash by where the kitten sleeps so it will get used to it and it’s smell.
2. place the harness on the kitten and just let it get used to it.
3. place the leash on the harness and let the kitten walk around draggin the harness to get used to it.
4. hold the leash and let the kitten walk where it wants.

Wish me luck!!

Well, they didn’t really respond well to the harness. So I’d virtually given up on the project. In order to get Sophie in the thing, she’d probably have to be drugged. :-P

On the other hand, I did get to try it out with Lucy. It wasn’t under very good circumstances, though. She was sick and dying, so we took her to the park. The first time we went, we put her in the harness. She did object a little, but she was too weak to object too dramatically. Once she was outside, she was totally okay with the harness. We took her to the park again the next day (the day she died), but didn’t bother with the harness. She didn’t need it.

I just know that if Sophie would let me put it on her and get her outside, she’d like it; but I don’t think we’ll get that far. :-(

Arrived. 2 years ago

My cat harness finally arrived. There were postal problems. Now that it’s here, I just have to start acclimating kitties to it and try to get one of them into it eventually.

tacogrrl is looking forward to what she can accomplish in 2009

It’s best to start young. Do it in a quiet, calm place. Reward cooperation. Give ‘em a break.

I ordered a kitty harness. When it arrives, I’ll start trying to train one. If I make any progress with one, I’ll order another and start training the other cat, too.

I'm doubtful 2 years ago

I think my cats are too old to learn this, but they would really love to be able to go outside. My apartment’s not really that big. So I’ll give it a shot. (And next time I get a kitten I’ll start training it to walk on a leash at a young age.)
