The one time I actually made money on eBay, it was just enough to break even. After that, it became a buyer’s market, and buyers in there are so suspicious of fraud that ALL sellers are suspect. I don’t recomend it unless you can invest in it like you would a brick-and-mortar business, including risking not being successfull.

Which one of us doesn’t have spare junk lying around the house? As they say, one man’s junk is the next man’s treasure.. And if you just take the time to do a little bit of cleaning (summer cleaning anyone?) it’s possible to make a buck or two by hawking it on eBay.. Being profitable here takes a bit of ingenuity and finding the right item that will sell. You can actually earn a lot from random junk you have around the house.

Almost anything can be sold to make money on eBay ... I once saw a tennis ball chewed up by his dog (no lie) go for $50 or so. In fairness the seller wrote a really good ad (even showed pictures of the tennis ball in the dog’s mouth.. cute and heartwarming!). A pack of Pokemon cards went for $80 or so because the seller wrote up a great story about how her kids snuck the pack of cards past her while she was doing her groceries and how infuriated she was. One of the tactics really is to share a good story behind the item you’re selling. Stories captivate people, in fact storytelling is one of the most powerful copywriting techniques there is. and once they pay for your item with their time and attention they’ll be more likely to buy something from you.

Another tip is to post pictures… Lots of it. I’ve had experience on eBay as both a seller and a buyer and posting pictures really help, ESPECIALLY if you’re selling a high-price item. It builds trust between you and the seller, and helps them visualize ownership which is another general rule of copywriting. Don’t just do a Google search and post the first picture you see. Actually grab a camera, take pictures and post them in the item description. Heck, post a video if you’re a little more technologically adept.

Oh, never compete on price. There’s always somebody willing to slash their prices to get the sale, and eventually you guys will all drive yourselves bankrupt and not make a profit from these sales at all. Instead, build value for your items. Make your offer IRRESISTIBLE. If you’re selling something with an incredible value, your price is hardly going to matter. You differentiate your item from the rest, and people will flock to you. Anyone can sell a PSP on eBay but what if you throw in 5 games with the purchase? These can be games you don’t play anymore or grab from the discount bin at Best Buy. That may not be financially viable but you get the idea.

These techniques are all forms of copywriting, to one extent or the other. There’s a whole lot more ideas you can use specifically to help you make money on eBay selling stuff around the house (or if you want, buy it at wholesale prices or trek over to the nearest garage sale and buy stuff to sell). I published a book which about copywriting SPECIFICALLY for eBay. It’s designed as a 10-day program about the fundamentals of copywriting and how you can use these to increase your sales and make money on eBay. Interested readers can read the content for free through the site. Trek on over to

and have a see for yourself. If you’re selling stuff on eBay (or even just thinking about selling stuff there) I’m sure there it’ll be a great resource to check out.

OK this has gotten pretty long now so I must bid adieu!
