Last week, after leaving it alone for several years, I finally pulled the boat up out of the side yard and onto the driveway where I can work on it a little.
My nephew offered to buy it as-is last week. I couldn’t sell it.
And yet, I can’t work on it, either. Since Wendy died, it’s become a symbol of all my dashed hopes. I sill have some hope, though. I want to go out in it, enjoy it. There’s just so much work between here and there. It’s the last thing I have on my list to do today…and here I am writing about doing it rather than doing it.
Sigh. We are moved and checked by forces we don’t understand.

I’ve realized that I just don’t want to keep this boat. It’s just too much work for one person. I went kayaking with a friend a couple of weeks ago—that was a much better experience. No gasoline involved. No engine noise.

My dad sold his boat finally, to his brother in law for cheap. I guess it’s good that someone’s getting some use out of it, but I know he’ll get a new one someday…

I totally blew this off, much to my wife’s lament.
The boat is entering it’s second dry year and my wife wants me to sell it. I probably should, but the thing is that I want to want to go out on it.
Now the winter is coming and I have to winterize it. I didn’t winterize it last winter, but we didn’t have more than about 20 minutes below freezing, anyway.
I just have to find a way to conquer this.

I’ve totally missed this goal and, to quote Stuart Smally (Al Franken), “that’s okay.”
I’ve hit some road blocks with my batteries and just being busy with family and work. The thing is, though, that I should be more eager to get past those road blocks and get out on the water. The weather has been amazing!
I just need to do it slowly and not get overwhelmed. I just need to do it.

I wasn’t able to take it out on openning day, which was my original goal. Just too much other stuff going on, plus the weather has been kind of lousy the last few days.
I did take some time to move the boat, which is a pretty big deal in and of itself. It’s been sitting all winter in this one kind of soft spot in the yard, so I’ve turned it around and pulled it up in front of the house where it will be easier to work on.

I was all set to take the boat out of its parking space in the side yard and get it all cleaned up and ready to go. But first, I wanted to put down some new crushed rock in front of the house. The delayed me for a week. Then, yesterday, I planned to take it out and start cleaning/testing it, but I decided to encode a DVD of old personal videos and then take the dog for a swim at the beach.
Next Steps- Find out when opening day really is—May 7, 2005
- Clean out and test the boat
- Get equipment and checklist together

Wendy and I talked about this goal the other day. We decided the next step is to take it out of it’s parking spot (it’s on a trailer), put it in front of the house, and clean it out. Sweep away all of the bugs and pine needles and make sure it runs. I want to do this before next Sunday.
