sunflowers&rosesSlight improvement

We got something to counter the damp from the weather sealing, and it has made a huge difference. The house smells better, feels cleaner, and I even feel better (less headaches and deeper sleep.) Also, folded all the laundry :) 11 months ago

Between the stress of school and pure laziness, my apartment is a WRECK. This week I’ll be straightening, organizing, and the like, and cleaning as I go. I already found mold along one of the windows thanks to the complex’s poor weather sealing. Joy of joys… at least that’s gone. Thank goodness today is a beautiful day to have the windows open. 12 months ago

SusstinnakoDoing well so far

Other than the occasional hiccup when I am unwell I am managing this much better than I expected too. And I am really enjoying living in a clean tidy house. 2 years ago

tomkat67renewed efforts

It’s really hard to keep up on this when I’m in school. I’m gone for 15 hours on at least two days of the week, and when I’m home, there is homework. I’ve decided to keep moving forward on this anyway, because so many things are easier to do when my environment is comfortable and clean. Every day I will concentrate on one thing beyond the regular maintenance of laundry, dishes, dusting and vacuuming. It could be putting up a shelf to store the laundry supplies, or deep cleaning behind the furniture. Just one extra thing every day. It’s worth a try anyway. 2 years ago

Clean often here and there instead of doing it altogether. 2 years ago

The main way this works for me is to not let it ever get dirty. So pick up anything that’s been left out every morning. Wipe the kitchen and bathroom services after every use, and when I go in and find Brendan has not wiped up behind himself just do it myself so it’s clean. Wipe up any spills etc as soon as they happen.

Even then it takes me 3 hours on a Saturday to go through the entire place. Dust and wipe everything, every ornament, every surface, every book. Sweep and wash all floors. Disinfect kitchen and toilet surfaces.

This is doable living with just one other person :) 2 years ago

KristenWhat I keep telling myself:

It didn’t get messy in a day; it’s not going to get clean in a day. 3 years ago

tomkat67Oh boy!

I am so not doing well on this. I came to a big realization about it. I, and my girls, just have too damn much stuff. I’ve been studying about William Morris (again) and his most famous quote is “have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful”. There are things in my home that could have been useful and/or beautiful, but are sitting in a corner wasting space. The question is what is important enough to keep that I am willing to maintain it? And things that I keep just for the memory? Take a picture, stick it in an album, give the thing away. Time to purge. 3 years ago

KristenUuuuuuugh.

Why is this the hardest, more irritating goal of all? 4 years ago

This goal is much easier now as at least it definitely happens once a week. Still lots of room to improve though….. 4 years ago

I have arranged for a cleaner to come every Wed for an hour so surely this goal will be sussed now?! 4 years ago

KristenReopening this goal after a year.

New apartment. New mess. New cleaning routine I need to figure out. 5 years ago

KristenTomorrow is my birthday: the end.

It does require doing a little every single day and doing more than a little at least once a week but I do know now that I can do it and it is worth doing. 6 years ago

KristenWeek 4:

Really need to do some laundry, but with torrential rains and no car, that’s been postponed. Even though we hate it, and hate living here, having the apartment tidy enough to not cause us further stress is pretty good. 6 years ago

KristenWeek 3: The Halfway Point

Low cash meant no laundry/grocery shopping this weekend, but that will be remedied tomorrow.

Vacuuming still needs to be done (and done regularly more often).

Other than a few spots that need some decluttering, generally continuing the “no death from unclean house embarrassment” trend. 6 years ago

KristenWeek Two:

I think my definition of clean is “would I die of embarrassment if someone dropped by on short notice?” and we’ve been keeping it at least that clean so far.

I could really use a new vacuum (or to move to a place with harwood floors). The vacuum we have now vacuums about 3 feet of carpet before it needs to be emptied and it makes the whole process a major chore. Maybe that’ll be next on the list: buy a new vacuum. 6 years ago

KristenWeek One:

Some backsliding due to husband going out of town for a job interview, but otherwise, pretty impressive for being the first week. I didn’t vacuum everywhere I wanted to, but that’s an okay trade-off for getting to the laundromat an unprecedented two Sundays in a row. 6 years ago

KristenMy house is crazy clean.

Now, to keep it that way.

If I can keep it clean - as clean as it is now - for six weeks (until my birthday) I will consider this one done. 6 years ago

KristenMy mom is coming over tomorrow.

This generally means a frenzy of oh shit, must clean activity. I’m going to use this as an opportunity to clean stuff up and then keep it clean, now that I’ve made my schedule/checklist of cleaning. 6 years ago

KristenOkay, it's getting there.

I cleaned the nasty stovetop yesterday. (Here’s a tip: spray-on oven cleaner works wonders on greasy, cooked-on junk on your stovetop.) Now I’m going to buy some kind of grease-cutting wipes and make wiping off the stove part of the daily kitchen clean-up.

Next, the bathroom. 6 years ago

KristenStep 2.

List made. Now, to clean the house so we start out with a zero balance of mess before we implement the new cleaning regime. 6 years ago

KristenStep 1.

Making a list of what, specifically, needs to be done in each room and how often it needs to be done. 6 years ago
