There are two approaches that one can take towards achieving this goal.
- Start playing with the camera and see what different settings have different affects
- Go through the basics of exposure ( aperture, shutter speed, their affect on depth of field, lens, how they function, focal length, what affect does that have on an image and things like that) and then try different compositions to see the affect.
As with almost everything else, you can’t really know everything before hand ( if ur a novice like me). So what i am doing is, that i put the camera on a tripod and then take around 20 pictures with different aperture, shutter speed, focal length while just changing one thing and keeping all the rest constant. So that really gives me the feel of how each setting/parameter effects the final product.
Google is the best companion. Google every term that worries you ( white balance, iso .. ) and get a feel of what exactly it has to do with the final product. To me, these all are tools. What i need to do is to be sure of the capabilities of each tool and how they work in a combination. Take another analogy, like playing a guitar: you can either cram the tunes, where to put ur fingers to play a certain song or you can try understanding what sounds every chord makes and then you can exactly start making your own compositions. So its really about understanding the capability or the “sound” of every parameter that you can play with, on you dslr. Once i understand that, i think it should enable me to concentrate and actually pre-work all the settings to get a shot that i want.

I have been doing serious photography for 3 years now. I just bought a dslr some 3 months back, a Nikon d90. I was not sure if i should actually go buy it. I thought i should buy it once i am ready to use it properly, but a friend (she is doing a masters in photography) convinced me to go ahead with it. She said and I quote ” You can’t learn swimming without jumping into a pool, or can you?” :)

I love photography. It’s been my thing since I was a little girl. I got my first camera when I was about 4 or so. Of course, I didn’t know how to work it until later on. And here I am at 17 years old, about to start my senior year of high school in the fall. I am super excited for what’s to become of me in the future. My favorite things to take pictures of are nature. I recently went on a mission trip with my church group to Canada. I got some breathtaking photos there. Like what you’d see on a postcard. It is absolutely lovely there. I am going to hopeully attend a good college and go to “photography school.” I know I must sound amateur, but this has been a lifetime dream of mine. With this entry I have also posted a picture I took in Canada. It really is quite beautiful.

Getting paid for a rather large commercial gig on an on-going basis. We’ll call that professional. Time to figure out a different photo goal that is much more meaningful.

It went smoothly this year, and I got much better coverage. I won’t look at the photos again for a few days, providing me with a little distance before the sorting and rating phase. Overall, I’m happy with what I did.

AKA- Grip and Grins. Shooting a small, local film festival this weekend- patrons and filmmakers. Tonight is the opening night.
It’s their second year as well as mine. With an understanding how the festival plays out, I hope to get better coverage than last year. There will be some Q&A’s with filmmakers after screenings, in the screening rooms again. Theaters are dark for a reason, and last years photos were less than ideal. Going to use some wireless strobes this time around. It’ll be fine…

I had started photography one year ago, and my ambition is to reach the level of proficiency on it. Photography helps me to sense unique and exclusive things around of me. So I guess that the most fundamental thing about photography is to believe that a photographer who makes a shot, not a camera who makes a photographer.
