I've moved into a new level of godess like domesticity  — 1 week ago

I’ve made several meals without a recipe… no one keeled over and died. No wretching was had. No X’s over the eyes with the feet up in the air. Plates were even cleared, I’m not saying any one wanted to eat the left overs the next day but hey… this is progress people!

I made some lovely peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies from scratch this afternoon. It probably would have been better to wait and make them this evening (because the house would have cooled off faster) but the recipe looked so good that I just had to try it. Even the dough by itself was tasty! I think I ate about half of it before I even put the cookies on the cookie sheet. : O I bet it’d be awesome with ice cream!

Booties anyone?  — 2 months ago

I officially learned how to knit today. Pretty soon my friends and family will have scarves and potholders and um, anything else square or rectangle. :)

I’ve been vacillating about whether or not to put this goal on my list for some time now. But finally I just decided, oh…what the heck. While I will never be Martha Stewart, my role in life at the moment is that of a stay-at-home mom. I spend loads of time in the house (cooking, cleaning, keeping my two-year-old from setting anything on fire) and I’m of the opinion that if you’re going to do something, you might as well do it well.

My cooking skills have vastly improved in recent years and I have a small arsenal of tried and true recipes that never fail me. I also know some little secrets that are only picked up with time. (Or in my case, from the internet.) For instance, if you add a little bit of oil to practically anything you’re trying to boil, it won’t boil over. I also know that you should grease and sugar the pans of anything sweet you’re baking rather than grease and flouring them. This, of course, helps with presentation and also increases the odds that everyone at the table will lapse into a diabetic coma.

I am sadly deficient in the area of sewing (pretty much anything having to do with cloth) and I see little hope for improvement there. Give me a dress pattern, some material, scissors, a needle, and some thread, and the final product will inevitably end up resembling a poorly constructed over-sized pillow case. (Like something the Jolly Green Giant might be able use.) Ask me to iron it and you’ll get back a poorly constructed over-sized pillow case with decorative burn marks. :P

I would love to learn more about entertaining. I do it from time to time but not often enough to feel really comfortable with it. I also want to learn some more cleaning tips. With a toddler in the house, I could really use those.

I’m off to see if I even own an apron now. Wish me luck!

I think I should put this one off for a while...  — 4 months ago

... I wholeheartedly would like to be the cookin’, cleanin’ machine that is the best June Cleaver mom in the world! However, we are sharing a home with other people for now and it’s a challenge to take charge in this situation. When we get our own place again, THEN I will become the 1950’s domestic goddess that I know I can be. :)

I went to my parents house yesterday  — 5 months ago

And when it came time to think about dinner I asked my mom if she had a couple ingredients… WHY? so I could cook us all dinner. Wow I really AM a domestic goddess!

rewind 1 year ago… I was still living with the distinction of being the girl who could burn pasta. HA!

the style is what I want  — 6 months ago

I’ve got the cooking, the cleaning, the sultry gazing at my hubby who wears dapper hats, but I haven’t quite perfected that 50s look… Maybe I’ll figure it out this year.

I think I've been well on my way to this for a while  — 6 months ago

I just didn’t know it at the time. Learning how to cook last year opened my eyes to so many things. I always liked to bake but only did so once a year. I just baked some bread and made some dinner in my crock pot. If I were to actually say that out loud right now, I think, there would be fear of me bursting out laughing.

That being said I’m really enjoying my new domesticity. That is what is so great about being alive; One can reinvent themselves over and over in a lifetime. Never staying the same and also never really changing. I don’t know what will be the bench mark that makes me check this off my too do list. I’m not sure I’m ready to do that yet. I still smile every time I see this on my list. So there it stays.
