Not only did I dig out my dear moley, I made my first spread in it too! I’m not brave enough to post it here but I’m very satisfied with this small start.

So when I listed this goal, I hadn’t even bought a sketchbook yet. Just recently, I decided that I could call this goal done when I reached the halfway mark.

Well, I’m past the halfway mark and I didn’t even realize it!

I’m just sittin’ there doodling away and it just hit me that I have no idea where I am in the book. I turned it sideways and was all, ‘Whoa! I’m over halfway through!’

That means I can take this off my list and mark it as completed. I’ll be making sure I’m staying faithful to my drawing but for now it is done!

    Yay!

    Uhm…now I gotta find a replacement goal.

Taking Orders  — 6 months ago

I was, once again, asking my art teacher if she would give me some more pointers on my work and she found another drawing she liked.

This time, however, I found myself saying, “Ok, well maybe I’ll make one for you!”

This should be easy, right? I made the first one quite quickly, this one should be easier!

Ha! As if! I had to put my book away like 10 times cause I absolutely hated the picture! I’d get one thing done and then have to ignore the drawing for at least an hour to calm down. Why was this so hard?! Why was I fighting this drawing?!

You know why? I know why! Because I was soo intent on not making any mistakes and making it as detailed as possible that I absolutely hated doing it! I went back to my first drawing and realized that it wasn’t detailed at all, it was loose and somewhat messy. So I went back to the picture I was drawing for my teacher and erased all my premade plans (except the ones already completed) and started over.

It went soooo much easier! I stopped hating the picture and ended up liking it more than the first one!

So I went to class yesterday and gave her the picture. She asked me to sign it (uhm…still haven’t figured out how to do that) and then she promptly placed it on her piano.

    Sideways.

    :)

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!  — 6 months ago

Hmm, maybe I should reserve that entry title for something a bit more important.

Anyway, I wanted to give an update on this goal. I am still doodling in the sketchbook and have a LONG LONG way to go before I get to halfway (the point at which I can remove this goal from my list!).

I have noticed, however, that I am struggling to give each colored pencil its 15 minutes of fame. Yes, it’s a bit anthropomorphic, but I wouldn’t want any color to feel unappreciated. So if anyone has any ideas on how to use yellows, oranges, reds and black I would appreciate the help. They are currently the focus of only one drawing (entitled Bubblegum Balls) and would prolly like more use!

I just don't want to regret anything  — 7 months ago

I feel like I have skills. I like drawing, and I’ve had multiple notebooks/sketchbooks. However, when I pick any of them up, and realize how far I’ve come, I want to rip out every page, or re-do them. So one of my close friends gave me a new one for christmas. It’s so lovely the way it is, blank, and I don’t want it to be another that I have to rip pages out of. People tell me just, draw what first comes to mind, take it slow. but nothing comes to mind.

For New Isabella and Duartestudios  — 7 months ago

I’ve been slowly working on my ‘classwork’ and that is going well, but one thing I do have to share comes because of Duartestudios and New Isabella!

Today, I went to class and asked my teacher to critique the artwork in my sketchbook. Since this is the stuff I play with, I was expecting a lot of pointers.

As she was going through it, she stopped on one page and commented how she really liked it. Then went on to give me pointers on other pages and then came back to that one page again.

Then she laid it on me! She said that she thought it was sellable!

I’ve been drawing for about 2 months and I already have a piece that may be sellable?!

As I sat there stunned, I thought of both Duartestudios and New Isabella and how they both encouraged me just to draw whatever. Didn’t have to be realistic, didn’t have to make sense, just do it!

And I did. Because of them.

So I wanted to share this little victory with them. They were the wind beneath my wings!

    Worth doing!

im an architecture major, so i have to keep one for drawing buildings and what nots. i’m a horrible drawer, i don’t even understand why i’m in this major, but when i get sad, angry, even happy, i reach for my sketchbook and everything seems to just flow. it makes me feel safe. i think i’ll start another one.
