It’s not really a “mountain” if it has stone stairs. But it’s still beautiful. I’ve seen sunrises and sunsets, done yoga, gotten drunk, made out and explored the side of the cliff on the edge where you’re really not supposed to go. It’s worth stopping off at Mayfield Park on the way back (or to) and wandering around. Don’t harass the peacocks, though. They’re easily annoyed.

I finally saw it... 3 years ago

Okay, so this place Ive heard so much about lies less than 5 miles away from my house. I thought, for some reason that it was deep in the Hill Country but its not. I live in the Clarkville neighborhood in Austin and its in Tarrytown. So yeah, I decided to go, by myself and experience it. I figured I’d be the only one there since it was early Sunday morning, but I wasn’t. In fact there were more people there than I would have liked. But the diversity of the crowd reminded me that I was in Austin and that people watching was a part of the experience of this place. There were tourist snapping shots, a young family, a man who appeared drunk or in some sort of altered state and the ubiquitous teenage couple holding hands and gazing out over the land. Mt. Bonnell was awesome and I definitely recommend it to anyone. I hope the next time I go its at the end of a lazy summer day just before a huge texas sunset with a sweetie on to my left and my camera on the right.
