How I did it: My college had two study-abroad programs, one to a city with which I was very familiar and one to Rome, Italy. I was leaning toward the former (to deepen my understanding and visit relatives) but luckily an adventurous friend nudged me toward Rome!
- I went to the orientation programs (yay, free food, although not nearly of the quality I would have in Italy.)
- I signed up.
- I got my scholarship to pay for the tuition (and maybe part of the living expense.)
- I followed the program instructions. I read a book about culture shock -- something common for longer visits, though not short vacations. I went to the school's crash course in Italian before I left.
I will spend 4-6 months there
