in just thinking about this goal. ‘Cuz that’s where I’m at. I still think I shouldn’t have been so stupid at age 12 when I was getting my first one: I had the option to choose Canadian or British, and I chose Canadian. That was dumb. Now its gonna cost me close to $1K when I finally do get around to getting it.
At least the rules have changed back to what they were, so that I can actually have one again; for a long time I was kicking myself because children of ex-pats could only get a step up from a visa. Now I can have a passport and wave it fanatically over the heads of others. Or something.
It’s not so much for me, it’s more things like down the road when I have children who are planning to go to school – what if one of them wants to go to the UK? Or what if immigration rules change again? My children will have a dead albatross of a last name hanging around their necks; the least I can do is give them a leg up from their European ancestry.

I sent off for the paperwork and it is now in my grubby little hand! This week’s mission, should I choose to accept it, is to fill the bloody things in and send them off to get the ball rolling on this after 10 years of thinking about it!

Right so it’s pretty straightforward, just filling out a form and mailing some money. Have the form, money, just need to renew my US passport (a dog chewed it).
I wonder if I’ll actually get to use it. I’m pretty sure my reserved relatives would pretend they’re on holiday, army-crawling across their living room floors if I actually showed up on their doorsteps. Nothing like family…
Probably best to go it alone.

So it seems I’m in a hurry to leave my country. I’m not running from the law and it’s not that I don’t like it here. It’s just that I’d probably appreciate it a whole lot more from a distance. My frame of reference is skewed as it’s been a while since I’ve had the chance to travel and I’ve got the green-grass complex. I know this. But life is short. I’m impatient…and I have family there.
So far, I’ve e-mailed people and solicited advice from my mother’s British friends.

renb83 is trying to set some goals again
Its really strange to see how much I have learnt about myself and what is important and unimportant in my life.
I wrote most of these goals about 8 months ago and now I have come back to 43things to make/update goals.
Things that were SO important to me 8 months ago are now only an occassional thought.
I might have grown up or something must have made me think about things that really to matter.
This is great as I now think I was quite shallow before?
There are FFFAAAARRRRR more important things to me now than getting my British passport, yeah it would be nice to have but I really dont care if I get it or not at the moment. Who knows in 8 months it might be a completely different story all together, will keep ya’ll posted….

renb83 is trying to set some goals again
have finally got the forms to fill out, have started filling them out but its getting complicated with fathers birth place and grandfathers birth place and thier original birth certificates etc etc.
But great news…. its only going to cost me $170 plus postage for a 32 page passport, not like the $300 I was told it would cost me.
yay, one more step closer to becoming a ‘kiwi/british backpacker’
