How I did it: Classes, classes, classes. And good teachers. The only way to learn is by doing. Even if you aren't rich, there are plenty of free resources (blender is a great animation tool). If you do decided you want a more commonly used tool, realize that you can purchase them (maya for example) at a steep discount if you are taking classes, since you get an educational discount.
