This has been a wonderful thing and I’ve enjoyed lighting the candles and saying the prayers every night. I didn’t go all out with the parties and the latkes and all that, kept it quiet and simple and it was a great contrast to all the tiresome holiday hooplah that has been going on all month. Plus my girlfriend surprised me with a gift each night, small treats like tape runner refills for my paper crafts/scrapbooking, and a packet of Bischoff cookies (those yummy cookies they serve on Delta flights sometimes). Fun and a good start to my Jewish practice for this year. 7 years ago

Just me tonight. Quiet little candlelighting and prayers before I go back to bed to get the second half of my day’s sleep before work tonight…. 7 years ago

Was a little shortened. Last night was the night we went to play team trivia at a bar in Decatur. It’s a cool and mellow place, and the other team members urged me to bring my menorah and candles and do the lighting there. Since the candles burn down pretty quickly I figured it would be okay to do if we got there early because it tends to be pretty empty in the place until just before the game starts. Unfortunately we got there late and the place was packed, we only had a tiny table, and the game was starting, so I didn’t do it. It would have been cool…maybe next year! So I did it after we got home…better late than never! 7 years ago

The first night also coincided with Christmas dinner, various dinner guests (including my GF’s mom which made me a bit self-conscious). A friend of a friend did the candle lighting and prayers, but it was my new (second-hand by way of Ebay) menorah that we used. Then we all tried playing dreidel, which was okay but we agreed it would be more fun as a drinking game.
Last night was more what I was personally seeking in observing Chanukah. Just me and my girl, I said the prayers and lit the candles and put the menorah in the window. Went outside to look at it and make sure it was visible from the street. Then my girl surprised me with a gift (a hoodie sweatshirt from Old Navy) and we spent the rest of the evening just peacefully hanging out, just the two of us. We watched travel shows and I finished up my Chanukah cards, which turned out cute. Happy! 7 years ago
