FINALLY! 2 months ago

I learned so much from the employment agency I went to—they really helped me fix up my resume and helped work on my interviewing technique. I was turning in applications everyday, everywhere (Craigslist and indeed.com seem like the best places to look) for pretty much any job including minimum wage. The people who contacted me more were actually from places I individually applied at (Target, CVS, Borders etc., whether they were hiring or not). None of my interviews worked out, BUT I learned a lot from each one.
I’d decided I was just going to do a volunteer job, because at least it would look like I was doing something. That didn’t happen after deciding to move out of state. Then, I got two calls about an interview, and one job offer—talk about depressing, rotten luck.

Just when I thought nothing could get better, my fiance’s Mom offered me a job doing data entry from home, full time, nine dollars an hour. I start Monday!!!

I got a job (any job) 3 months ago

I had an interview at my old university, and the next day they called and offered me the job. I still can’t actually believe it. I’ve been doing work experience and really loving it, and under the impression I might get a job out of it at the end. So I didn’t prep for the interview at all.
After getting the job offer, I spoke to the person I’m doing the work experience for, just to try and get an idea of whether I had a good chance of getting a job in four weeks and what the money is like. She called her boss (they are both really nice) and it doesn’t look too promising.
After a lot of going back and forth (and some crying too, lol) I’ve decided to take the job. It gives me a reliable income each month so I can properly plan my goal of moving to L.A., probably (hopefully) in the spring. I can finally move forward. So, I guess this goal is done. Finally.

Well..... 3 months ago

I got a part time job at a fashion store to start in September, paying minimum wage. I know this goal is “get a job, ANY job”, but it’s not exactly what I had in mind.
After almost 3 months being unemployed, I have kind of given up finding a job the conventional way. I was about to apply for a job online yesterday when I noticed it had 610 applications already. I didn’t bother. Right now I am doing some work experience. It’s for a research company, and it’s six weeks of unpaid work but there are plenty of benefits. I get to work on my own, from libraries/home/Starbucks or wherever works for me. And I can pick my own hours, though I’m working with time goals in mind – each section of history I’m researching should take two days. So for now I’m working as much as I need to, but if I get a job at the end of it I would need to work my 8 hours a day.
The company are really cool and have said that they are hoping to have enough work for me to do after the work experience that I can actually get paid for. I would probably work freelance until December, maybe January, because that works with their timeline. But you never know. Freelance and short term works for me because of my plans to go back to L.A.
So in an ideal world I would go freelance after six weeks and actually earn some money (which is crazy money, by the way – lowest hourly rates are apparently $30US. And I would love the lifestyle of being able to pick and choose my own hours. But I can’t help but think that it’s all too good to be true, that this won’t work out the way I hope because, let’s face it, it never does?

This is SO frustrating. The deadline for the job I really want was Friday, and I didn’t hear anything today which I guess is a bad sign, as interviews are Wed/Thurs.
I just graduated with a good degree, have plenty of experience working in offices and I can’t find ANYTHING?
GRRRRRR!!

When it rains it pours….

Unemployed for two months and suddenly modelling for a drawing class Thursdays at $15/ an hour (and I don’t even have to take my clothes off!) Soon to begin training for a part-time job for the county animal control office. Just as all this happens, all the places I sent out resumes over the last month start calling me back. AND I get my Act 34 government background checks in the mail to complete my application as a substitute teacher.

Two weeks ago I had no prospects and lived in fear of perpetual brokeness and dependency. Now at least there’s a little something to get me through for now.

Just goes to show ya gotta keep on keepin on.

A lot of it came through who I know in town. If you don’t see the point in meeting new people and socializing and being nice, you could miss opportunities you don’t even know are there!

Finding a job in Norge 10 months ago

Ever since I finally got a work permit from UDI (after like 18 months, even though I’m married to a Norwegian) my wife and I have been looking for a job for me. It’s been since September 2008 that I’ve been here in Bergen with a permit and I haven’t been able to find a job because I don’t know the language and the bad economy in the states has effected Norge.
