I think I can safely say that I’ve taken this as far as I can now. Between changing job locations and the congestion charge western extension, I made my mind up to sell the car a few weeks ago, and on Thursday it was finally sold.
London has better public transport than most of the country, so making the switch is not that incredible, but there is still the ‘trust issue’ of relying on buses / trains / tubes after having your own four wheels. My advice is to force yourself to make the decision from an detached point of view as possible
I live in Chicago so public transportation can get me anywhere I want to go in the city. I haven’t had a car in over a year. Amtrak or bus is fine to get me home and ends up being cheaper than paying for the gas it would take to get me to and from my family 5 hours away. I spend about as much on my monthly bus/train pass as I did on car insurance alone—much less if I were paying for gas and parking. Although I can’t imagine doing it in a smaller, less urban area, living without a car has been easier than I thought it would be.
I really need to sell my car. What a lump. . . What a cash drain! What a wasteful pile of negative energy. It is some much more relaxing to use public transport. No stress! I can read a book! I feel better about my impact on the environment! No complaints.
