Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

Complain to the Robots about the new subscriptions page

Recent activity

SueWhateverI’m hopeless

Since after some time I did realize that “Complain to the robots” doesn’t mean only posting it as a goal but actually involves writing to the Robots I thought that precisely that should be the next logical step. But somehow I never have the time to talk to Robots. So I have to face the fact that there’s no telling when I’m going to get to it and since it’s not something I yearn to do, I’ll sort of give up on it. At least as long as it takes me to figure out how to say it Spanish and add it to 43cosas list, since the complaint I have is connected with 43cosas. 8 years ago

SueWhateverWhat to do with this goal?

It would be nice to be able to mark it as worth doing since Robots really corrected a lot of things, but I can’t do it yet. There’s still the question of no Subscription page in Spanish. If it’s so difficult (or maybe not necessary being 43 Cosas ain’t so popular) maybe dear Robots could just add the entries in Spanish to the general Subscription page?
How many goats I have to sacrifice to get this wish?
Or maybe I should take more modern approach and try to convince more people to use 43 Cosas and therefore enlarge the number of potential protestants. 8 years ago

They listen! 8 years ago

I felt a bit like what Ember said here, but what was bothering me the most were old subscriptions reappearing out of nowhere, and being unable to delete them. Now that’s fixed, so there isn’t really something to compalin about. I still prefer the old subscriptions page (goals, entries and comments were easier to differentiate, at least to me), but I guess I’ll just have to live with that.
On the other hand, I love the “add a reminder” option, and I’d like to thank the Robots for that! :) 8 years ago

AnnieDeeAnd the bug in the dates & times

A few days ago I was on about page 3 of my subscriptions when I saw entries that were weeks old, only they showed up with new dates. I went to the person’s page to make sure that I was seeing it right and there was definitely a problem. I’m not sure that it’s happened since, but I’d have more confidence in the entries (meaning that I wouldn’t miss any) if someone could confirm that this bug has been found and fixed. 8 years ago

AnnieDeeWish List for the Subscription Page

First off, I agree that change is good. I am not complaining, these are just my thoughts on the new 43Peeps Subscription Page.

There was something about the look and feel that we all liked about the old page. The new page on 43Peeps has been available for quite some time, yet most of us put up with “Ooops” rather than use the 43Peeps page before we were forced to change.

The biggest difference that I see is the column with the entries is on the right side of the 43Peeps page and it was on the left side of the old page. I’ll bet that’s why the proportions seemed different to Des. While I can see logically why it’s on the right, I prefer it on the left. It’s much more comfortable and natural to read with the main column on the left.

Goals, entry titles, and comment titles are actually better on the “new” page. I agree with the others, though, who would like to see the comment title immediately before the body of the comment.

I’d like to see a link for “comments” like on the old page. It would be so much easier to make a comment (or read others) directly from the subscription page.

The last important thing (to me) is to have a direct link to my 43T page from my subscription page.

Thanks for “listening” to me. 8 years ago

I’d like an option to see entries from by subscribers limited by site, i.e. only see their ideas on ideas.43things, their places on 43 Places, etc., or better yet, be able to check off which Robot Coop sites I want to see their entries from that day.

Thanks, Robots! 9 years ago

SueWhateverQuoting Abe Simpson…

Or paraphrasing something he said: “Why would God let me live for so long if I couldn’t complain?”
. . .
Ok, I see some improvements in the new 43T pages, but the lack of Application error pages it ain’t. 9 years ago

DesIn addition to...

...the new page being harder to read (which I’ve addressed elsewhere), and the comment title/entry title/goal title thing being all mixed up, my major complaint is that it updates so slowly. The people I subscribe to have made comments that show up on the Zeitgeist recent comments page, but still haven’t shown up on subscriptions. It makes it hard to hold a “conversation”. Ideally, this delay would be no longer than 10 minutes. 9 years ago

cubalibreI let my views be known

and that’s always worth doing. Thanks to the robots for listening 9 years ago

Thanks for all the attention and hard work Robots! 9 years ago

Happy PhantomThank you John Peterson

He’s right. I jumped to complain, not even realizing what a task the robots have in this. There were so many complaints about the Oops pages, they had to do something.

Here are my suggestions:
Keep – cheer options, parent links and being able to see how many people are subscribed to me

Add –
a list of WHO is subscribed to me

links to goals my subscribers have in common with me (similar goals based on tags would be cool)

the ability to pick what you want to subscribe to (goals, entries, comments, or even cheers or all four)

Subscription options for not just people, but threads or goals. For instance if I like a thread, but can’t keep a close enough eye one it. Or maybe to be able to bookmark threads so we can come back to them later. I often forget what I got so into a few days ago. Or perhaps there is a goal that I have (or don’t) and want an e-mail every time someone adds an entry or comment to the goal.

Hey folks! This our opportunity to make a wish list. Yay robots! 9 years ago

SueWhateverNew subscriptions page sucks!!

I’ll just find something better to do instead of getting frustrated because I’m not able to move through 43 Things as I would want to… Hopefully in a day or two, things will work better. 9 years ago

Happy PhantomI learned something new

The reason I lost some of my subscriptions is that some of them are not on 43People. This sucks. 9 years ago

lazloWorth/Not Worth...

This was worth doing for the following reasons:

1) Micheka both asked me to join a team, which I must get over my weird aversoion to, AND she found/thought of things that I did not think of. I love it when people do that.

2) I need to complain more. This is true especially if, as Josh noted in a comment to my entry, I can do so clearly and articulately, instead of just taking it, or complaining for complaining’s sake. 9 years ago

Josh PetersenAiming to make it better

Folks – first thing – take a minute and breathe deep. 43 Things is all about improvement and change – so please try and understand that the goals of the change are improvement.

The big improvement we are after here is site stability. We’ve been plagued with “Ooops pages” because of the way the old subscriptions page worked. We simply can’t leave the site having stability issues where 1/20 pages is an error.

We will be working today to add back the missing features. We’ll make it possible to cheer from the subscriptions page, see how many people are subscribed to you, and try and figure out how threaded comments ought to work. If folks can give us specifics about what they want the new subscriptions page to look like and how they want it to behave that would be awesome.

But we are going forward – not back – so please make suggestions for improvement. Complaining about wanting things to stay how they were is sooo boring. Suggesting how to help us meet our goals is sooo 43 Things.

Lastly, check out some of the features of the new subscriptions. You can click on a person’s feeds and pick only the feeds you want. You can add feeds from other services (like someone’s blog, links, or whatever). There might be something you find you like once you get over the fact that 1. you can actually load the page, and 2. you don’t like that it is different.

We understand folks might find it hard to adapt to the new subscription feature, but we hope you’ll give it a try and we promise to improve on it. 9 years ago

lazloMicheka has swayed me... the other side…

I really wanted to like the new page, I really did. It was nice to have the subscriptions link actually go somewhere. And I really dislike the thought of myself complaining when all these sites have been such a boon for me.

Micheka has made valid points concerning these pages that are beyond mere layout, that have deterred from the functioning of the page, and I must join forces with her in this team.

1) When one of your subscriptions comments on someone else’s thread, the listing in your subscription page no longer indicated who the third party is, and you cannot see who they are conversing with without going into the thread itself.

2) User cannot cheer an entry from the subscription page, one must follow the link through to the original entry, sometimes leading the user through a longer thread, making it difficult to find the entry that was desired to be cheered in the first place.

3) The linking of all a subscribee’s content from the 4 sites, while it can be turned off for any one given user for any one of the four given sites, can only be detail modified through the user going through the subscribee’s home page on 43people, and this much linking just makes everything overwhelming.

4) The lack of a counter as to the amount of subscribers a user has when they check their own subscribees’ content.

I’m not completely sold on the last issue yet, but the others are enough to make me believe that something other than the layout was lost in the conversion. 9 years ago

AbsnasmAw, Robots. I know you're trying hard... fix the broken subscription page, but we don’t like this new one! There’s no option to cheer, it’s amalgamated all 43 sites into one (when many of us are only interested in 43T) and worst of all we can’t see how many subscribers we have! Can we have the old one back, please, warts and all? It’s better the devil you know. Kylie was right all along. 9 years ago

cubalibreWhat I don't like

It doesn’t seem as well presented or useable as the previous screen. Most of all though, and this was a problem with the old page too, is that it doesn’t seem to update properly. Entries I know my subscriptions have made don’t always appear on there. 9 years ago

Happy PhantomWTF?

Okay, I click on my subscriptions page today and I am totally baffled. It has merged ALL 3 43 sites. I am not interested in what my subscriptions have to say on all of the sites, just the 43T site (no offense) and now I can’t see how many people are subscribed to me (something I am fascinated with) or even all the people I am subscribed to.
