How to improve my knitting skills
How I did it: i had learned to knit and purl about 3 years ago. i made some scarves, then i kind of went cold on the concept.
between my boyfriend's mother, ravelry.com, and knittinghelp.com i've learned all the basic skills for actually knitting items that are useful and fun, and even learned some cabling. and i plan to continue. chosing projects that force me to learn at least one new skill.
since mid december i've made 7 hats, two cowls, some washcloths, and a couple pairs of mittens.
i wish i had gotten over myself sooner. i could be covered head to toe in alpaca by now. and who doesn't want that, really...

For me, a pair of Fetching wristwarmers (learning how to cable!)
For T, a Jayne Cobb hat. Just got to find non-wool yarn that will work.
Finally, after over a year of diddling around with the stress blanket and scarves that didn’t really turn out as I’d like, a finished object that’s being worn! T’s hat is finished and on his head. I’m both proud of it and cross with it at the same time – it’s definitely not badly done, but one of the joins is a little loose, and a couple of the decrease lines at the crown are slightly wobbly, and I didn’t really know what I was doing with the blocking….
Still, once I sat down to it, it only took a handful of evenings to make. I can actually finish! And it can only get better from here. In honour of this, I’ve changed this goal from “learn to knit properly” to “improve my knitting skills”. If I can make a wearable hat in the round, I can bloody well knit properly already.
I went to This Is Knit this afternoon, and after chatting to the lovely woman who owns it, came out with two sets of magic loop needles, and two lots of yarn – Debbie Bliss cashmerino for a hat for me, and Debbie Bliss cathay for a hat for the allergic-to-wool T. Now to look up magic loop tutorials on the web…
I’m hoping this gives me another kick start, since my initial burst of enthusiasm in the last fortnight has tapered off as I tried to learn the 17 different ways of increasing and decreasing from the S+B book, without any particular project in mind.
