How I did it: First I interviewed the person who commissioned the quilt. I let her see several sketches of my vision of the quilt. This was a unique t-shirt quilt because the t-shirts were not uniform in size. We talked and came up with a collaborative result.
Next, I laid out the quilt on graph paper, scaling everything out so that all I had to do was cut the fabric and piece the puzzle together.
We shopped for the fabric (later I found that I had underestimated the amount needed for the backing because it is a second quilt).
Over the course of about 90 hours I pieced the quilt. Last, I made the "quilt sandwich" with back, batting and top. I basted the layers together with safety pins. I used the tying method to bind the layers together. I finished by embroidering their names and date on the back. She was very happy when she saw the quilt.
