We caught a squirrel while it was injured and trying to cross a busy road. My boyfriend (now husband) grabbed it with a car mat and put it inside a big acquarium. We had it for about 5 weeks. It would freak out whenenever someone came near its new home so we called it twithcy. We put nuts and stuff inside and cage and wait a few feet away and it would come eat them while we watched – so cute!
The day we let it go was very sad – it just ran away into the trees as if nothing had every happened.
Bye twitchy!!
I did this when i was about 10 or so…
chased it into the wood pile in my backyard, reached in and grabbed it by the tail. The poor thing was scared out of its mind.
I put it in a shoebox and kept it for a couple of minutes before my mom told me to let it go. No one could believe I actually caught a squirrel. It was worth doing just because I can say I’ve had a pet squirrel.
i was driving down a fairly busy road and saw a tiny baby squirrel right about to walk in the road. there were no trees around, and i didnt see any other squirrels nests or anything around, so i picked it up and brought it home. its eyes weren’t even open yet, and it snuggled and was sweet. we put it in a playpen with a heating pad under it… and we fed ti with an eye dropper. finally it was getting a little active, so we took it to an animal rehabilatiation (sp?) place. it was fun, but a LOT of work.
I’ve been thinking about this one, and I really don’t want to catch one. Play with one, yes. But catch? No.
Freaking yes, I want to catch one! But of course I’ll let it go because it would make my heart hurt to keep it away from its tree and store of nuts and family.
I can, however, seemingly talk to these creatures. Maybe one will just hop into my arms or something. :)
maybe this doesn’t count because the squirrel’s back leg was broken so he really wasn’t as scrappy as your average squirrel. The thrill was still there though because let’s face it…feral animal…skin to fur contact…pretty awesome. Anyway I just drove him to the nature museum and they rehabilitated him and let him go.
Okay…i say it counts.
