In all honesty, I’m actually 2 countries into this goal as I’ve seen the sun rise in Australia (and in numerous cities in Australia) so yay! 3 years ago

Travelling LifeMount Cook, NEW ZEALAND

We were told by everyone who learned of our itinerary plans that it would be some rare and exceptional fortune to see Mt Cook in full view. The clouds often concentrate around the mountains and from the base of the Mt Cook valley, the view of the tall peak is obscured from view. Yet fate it seems had other plans for as we rounded a certain corner on the old highway, we saw the mountain full in view. Its white snowy peak stood like a beacon amidst the wide mountain ranges and the clouds which threatened to obliterate our views hovered indecisively above the peaks.

That was of the nighttime and even as 9:00pm came and darkness fell, the mountain was erased from view by those same grey clouds which had threatened our views earlier that day. The dawn of a new day does however invent its own rules, it mixes its own colours and erases any flaws which may have inhibited it the previous day, skies are made blue, snow shines a stark white like the fluorescent moon and splashes of pink are painted upon the new sky. The clouds are used not to threaten the picture, but rather to enhance its beauty. The light infuses itself in the silken waves of grey and produces a masterpiece of colour in the skies.

The sunrise of Mt Cook lasted for half an hour and in this time we saw countless transitions of light, colour and exposure. The mountains changed shape as the clouds shifted and the snow was illuminated section by section as the sun rays danced upon the mountains peaks. It was an awe-inspiring time of day and a memory that I will never forget 5 years ago

Travelling LifeCape Town, SOUTH AFRICA

Someone once said “We can only appreciate the miracle of a sunrise if we have waited in the darkness.” For without means of comparison, nothing in life bears much consequence, poignancy or expression. This photo was taken out of darkness, as the shadowed mountains of the southern West African coast which had been masked in the formidable greyness of night erupted into the glorious splendor of daybreak. Hues of royal purple and beams of hallowed light painted upon the skies this masterpiece of morning and captured an image both on camera and in the most vivid of my memories. 5 years ago

Travelling LifeKenya, AFRICA

This photo was taken in Amboseli National Park, Kenya. Separating from the rest of the small group who had risen early to capture Africa’s first light, a fellow photographer and I traipsed across open ground at 6:00 in the dim light of morning only too aware of our volatility amidst the wild of Kenya. As we were walking towards a shadowed Acacia Tree, my companion made a half-serious comment that should an animal surprise itself upon us; he would throw his camera bag in my direction and run like the wind… I was only too certain of his cowardice intent.

The dawn of Amboseli was a spectacular vision to behold. The sun rose above the undulating horizon like a fire on a summer’s night and as it wheeled its broad disc above the plains, the landscape revealed the wild and untamed nature of an African savannah. 5 years ago
