flavors i won't be trying 3 years ago

.. can be found in the wacky world of japanese ice cream and the wackier world of japanese ice cream.

i must say i won’t be going anywhere near ox-tongue (yuck!), squid (personally, i find squid a bit too chewy), whale (i don’t think i could ever eat whale in anything..), eel (those creatures freak me out!), raw horseflesh (?!?) or any other meat ones, natto (just read the appetizing description on that one)..

i would try oyster, crab, sweet potato.. probably most vegetable, liquor and flower ones i could do. :]

    garlic 3 years ago

i tried this a while ago too.. from “the stinking rose” restaurant in SF (there is also one in LA).

this is actually not bad at all! it is vanilla-ish and mild, and has a caramel molé sauce which is rather nice. i first heard about this a while ago when i read about the garlic festival in gilroy, CA. i think they also have garlic chocolate chip cookies there :D

caramel-balsamic vinegar; pomagrenate 3 years ago

another flavor i have tried before is a caramel-balsamic vinegar gelato, which was really really good! kind of like caramel but with a darker deeper flavor, almost like a nice, aged, mellow wine. well, it doesn’t taste like wine, but it’s more the feeling (if that makes any sense?) i can’t really describe the flavor at all, but it’s good!

tonight i saw pomagrenate ice cream at the store, and how could i resist trying that? i don’t know that it’s really that unusual, but it’s a really nice flavor. it’s made by the pom juice company people and has a light pomagrenate flavor with chocolate chip pieces. yum!

commercial icecream had nothing on my MOm! 3 years ago

I grew up on a self sustaining farm in the 60’s and 70’s.we had a milk cow that was a prodigious producer! my mom thought of some of the most wonderful tastes and some of the worst!
I remember making little frozen peanut butter balls to put in to banana, breaking all the christmas peppermint to put in to mexican vanilla, cutting up and putting all the oranges my great grandparent sent from flordia in a Blender so she could put them in home made yogurt then she froze it, what a concept in 1974.
cheese curd in vanilla we had that to. my dad really did suggest some homemade beer be added but that was vetoed by mom.I did’nt eat store bought ice cream till i went on my first date at 16! and it was a real disappointment, but i smiled and ate it,it was just to bland after mom’s wonderful concoctions. My grandpa was a district sales person for a papergoods supply we had some real cool containers to put all that icecream in.

beer and durian 3 years ago

beer flavored ice cream. i just pointed to it and said “ok i’ll try this one, do people like it?” she just said a lot of people try it. so i had a taste. it’s just like beer.. in sorbet form.. too weird!! it was like a watery sweet beer icee. and it’s budweiser beer specifically. really a strange experience. i don’t know if another beer like a nice belgian monk-made brew (those are tasty) might be better…

then i tried the durian. for those that have not heard of this fruit, it is large and spiky and very very stinky. i have had the juice before and to me, it tastes like sweet onions. the ice cream was the same flavor.. sweet onion-esque. (shaped like a hedgehog and smells like compost?)

i also tried the “japanese purple rice” flavor, which was not bad at all. kind of vanilla-ish, perhaps like rice pudding but with a few grains of purple rice to chew on. i got a larger scoop of this with dark chocolate.

i had some gelato today 3 years ago

just some good old normal chocolate and hazelnut :)

they didn’t have anything unusual in the particular place i went to, except for this lip balm that has actual chocolate (and a really good kind—!) in it. i got the chocolate mint lip balm (hmm that reminds me of eighth grade and those little metal tins, with brown and green lip stuff in it..) and, it’s rather nice !

the did have a white wine custard kind of flavor, but it was close to an egg nog taste for me.

the place that’s closer to my apartment has beer gelato. i am thinking of trying it, but i am afraid of the budweiser can they put on display with it. did they use that beer to make it??

i have also tried 3 years ago

    cheese!

i was just reminded. it was pretty good, and yes, had bits of cheese.

i am a bit sick now but when i am better, i think i can start working on this one! there is a gelato place in chinatown here that has a few odd ones..
