funnyvalentine Is learning how to trust (herself) again.

List of things I have gotten for free in the past month or so: 1 week ago

(mostly from next to garbage cans, by recycling centers, etc.)

bookcase

laundry basket for dirty laundry

2 TV’s- one functioning, one fixable

pretty orange dress (no stains or anything, and it looks GREAT on me!)

4 embroidered pillow cases

office chair

paper globe lamp

TV stand with shelves for movies, etc.

luggage

sheets

wool blanket

a couple self-improvement books

3 pairs of leather boots

black pants

black skirt

yellow dress

white sweater

2 lace pillow cases

“Tivo” box

internet router

digicam (cheaper one, but still)

hall lamp (that doesn’t work in our hall, but I am sure I can give it away)

and TONS more-including some cans that I got good money for recycling…

OOH!

Espresso cups

Coffee mugs

spaghetti strainer (the fancier kind that is painted white and has the holes in flower-shapes-which I have always wanted!)

(All of the above was 100% free! I also got a ton of stuff from second-hand stores this past month – like a sofa bed and a recliner. And I got a bunch of food from a girl that was moving out of her apartment. I paid 100 crowns for about 400 or 500 crowns worth of food!)

there is a requirement that a certain percentage of crops be destroyed each harvest. give me just one good reason for that.

I know Oprah had this on her show, but that’s not my motivation. Ants is where I get my motivation. They are always scavenging off of what us humans discard. They’ll eat anything as long as it is not rotten. Even then… Why should people starve when there is a bounty at our feet? There are edible plants and plenty of edible food thrown away. Usually because of some arbitrary date on the side of the box. This goes bad on 3/14/09. Give me a break. And the stuff in the garbage is usually recently expired stuff. Like one or two days. Or even not expired at all. Come on, people. There is no reason to starve in America at least.

I saw this episode on oprah about how perfectly good unspoiled food is thrown away in nyc. It just happens that I live in nyc and there are local freegan “trash tours” in my area. I would love to go a few times just to see what I can find.
