I want to travel the entire U.S. coastline, or at least a good majority of it straight through this spring or summer. It’s going to require me quitting my job, since this is going to take at least a month and I have to admit I’m a little hesitant to do this especially during these hard financial times. However, I feel like if I don’t do this soon, it’s never going to happen and I’m not about to take that risk.
I think my sister is willing to travel with me, but does anyone have any advice on how to travel solo if it comes to that?
How to take a cross-country road trip
How I did it: Came back from Iraq with some money in my pocket, got a car, and me and a buddy just left. We had a few things we wanted to see, but no actual destination in mind. Just kinda wandered the country for 6 weeks until an accident in Missouri. Rented a car, went back to Jersey. Waited a few weeks, retrieved my car and decided to detour up to Niagara falls and all the northeast states.
Lessons & tips: Prepare yourself for a lot of driving. Learn the love of coffee, but know when to pull over and nap. Have a full sized spare, basic provisions, and a good first aid kit. Read about areas you'll go through, bring an atlas, and see the sites.
Resources: Honestly money is the driving force here. Obviously a car and fuel and whatnot too. But without the green, it's hard to get around.

My ex had this idea to drive from Alaska all the way down to Argentina. At first I thought he was crazy and the thought scared me. But I warmed up to the idea. I’d love to travel through Mexico and down to South America. I haven’t done the drive yet down the Pacific Coast Highway either yet.
see the rest of the states i haven’t seen and drive all the way to the west coast, with plenty of time to stop along the way and spend where i see fit.
If I did this, I want to do it right, no planning and possibly alone (although that probably won’t ever happen).
I move to Miami within the week, right now I’m sleeping on my Parents’ couch in the Tampa area. The trip across the country itself was great, it’s been less so since I’ve arrived.
So I’m actually doing this this summer… but I’m not coming back. I’m moving from Walla Walla, Wa to Miami, FL. I’m gonna miss home soooo much, but I’m so excited for the trip and the work I’ll be doing.
My friend, Dan, and I are planning on going on one after we graduate. We’re going to play emo-acoustic songs and Smiths covers in a ton of coffee shops and just be happy. I really can’t wait, because road trips are awesome. As long as the radio doesn’t bust, and you can tolerate the person you’re driving with.
Last year my best friend and I drove the entire coastline of the U.S. It was hands down the best experience of my life. I drove the entire time, and the whole trip took us about a month. Renting a car was the most costly part. Hotels were relatively cheap- we would stop in at least 5 each night and compare pricing to get the lowest rates that we could. I’ll never forget the feeling of the air on my face, day in and day out, no worries or responsibilites…it was wonderful. You’ve got to do it.
But I’m confident that the opportunity will present itself. Right now I’m thinking that if I go back to school in a few years and get accepted at UT Austin, we could drive there. MA to TX isn’t quite cross-country, but it would suffice. Even better if we end up moving to AZ like we want to do one day.
I want to do one of those road trips where you take the less travelled backroads, stopping in all the little towns, talking to the people – that would be amazing to me.
