So about a year ago, a friend discovered a really neat book in the dusty music supply room at the arts school we worked at.
It was written by Duncan Hines (yes, he was real and not what you’d think)— a guide to dining around America. He is credited as being the first to compile such a reference. He published it from 1935-1950. My copy is from 1945.
Since the Hubs and i are serious foodies and also really into vintage/historical America, we have decided to undertake visiting as many of the listed restaurants as possible.
I started this blog in December to celebrate an era that has past. Many of the restaurants in the book are long gone and for those, I want them to have some lasting record on the internet. I figure, many of these places were sites of weddings and probably feature in great personal stories.
Of the restaurants that are still open, we will try to go ourselves, but i want to encourage others to patronize these amazing businesses… to still exist means that they have been around for over 70 years–a serious accomplish in the food biz!
