Me and my mom made a pact. Every day she will call me and teach me a new phrase in Ibo. I have a place where I write them down- based on sound since I’m not familiar with the writing system. But the goal is to speak it, not write it! I am happy that my mom is making the effort to call, even though she forgot all last week.
I am excited about this and it is a good time to connect more with my mother as well. So far its been 2 weeks since it started.

I will ask my parents a word everyday. I would like to know this language to carry it on and talk to others and feel more connected to my culture.

To all my sisters and brothers by heart, (Im German, but my husband is Igbo, so I am learning the language and loving each and everything about it) I know its not easy to learn this language, when you’re not in Naija. But I encourage all of you who are willing to learn, you are doing a wonderful job in saving your culture. May Chi bless you !
Keep your heads up !
Love,
Carolin

I, like many of you, would like to learn Igbo. My father was Nigerian born and only spoke a few words while around me. I would love to learn Igbo and will find some way to do it. Sadly, I haven’t found many books or cds. If anyone finds any, please let me know.

I am a NIGERIAN BORN american and mad that I wasn’t brought up over in Naija. My parents didn’t speak to me but I CAN understand it a little. BUT I PROMISE I WILL SPEAK IT FLUENTLY!

My father is an Igbo from Nigeria, and Igbo is the language and culture of his family. My paternal grandmother doesn’t speak English, so we can’t really communicate. I would love to be able to learn the language of my culture in order to be able to connect with it more, as well as be able to visit Nigeria (and Igbo ex-pats in both North America and Europe!) and know a local language.
As of now, I just know words here and there, and the meanings of my and a few other names, but my goal is to at least be conversational.
