How to start using Remember the Milk religiously
How I did it: I typed in my daily assignments for starters. It helped me see that I had made progress when I felt down, so that I was motivated all over again. It also showed me what I had left to do.
I also synchronized it with my 43things.

purging goals.
satisfying the “feel ok with giving up on personal goal” goal.
I’ve been using this for months now, and it’s gotten to be part of my daily habit (more accurately, it’s a widget on my netvibes page , which IS my daily habit.)
but I’m also learning some things about myself. When it comes to to-do lists, it seems that I do better with making my daily lists on paper. The physical act of writing them and then physically crossing them off, with pen in hand, seems to work better for me than any typed list.
However, I’m using Remember the Milk to remind me to do things I need to do on a regular basis. I have it set up to remind me when to clean the furnace filter, for example, and when to pay bills. I also have a list of tasks that I need to accomplish, but which don’t have a deadline applied, like “clean out Ramona’s toy box” and “inventory yarn.” Someday, when Ramona’s party is over and we’re back from California and our July 4 visitors are gone and I’m bored (which never actually happens but anyway), I can scroll down and remind myself of these tasks.
So I’m using it, but not really for my daily to-do list. I don’t know if that’s using it “religiously” or not (snide/philosophical comment deleted here), but I’m happy with my use and I think I can call this Done.
has been going okay. I’m finding that it doesn’t work for me to put a deadline on too many things. I have a long list with no deadlines, some things that recur weekly, and try to make most of my list the morning of. Working okay for now.
I’m moving into a different office and losing my spacious expanse of whiteboards. So I spent time yesterday entering everything from the whiteboard into Remember the Milk.
This will be a real test of RTM for me. I’ve had a serious whiteboard addiction for 20 years, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to break the habit.
Two things have made this even better for me:
- Checking my lists on my bberry pearl
- Using RTM on netvibes
I’m so pleased with this, but the real challenge will be to keep using it once the novelty has worn off.
I’m a tad obsessed with RTM. I set up some lists to share with a co-worker. Normally, we email back and forth—“did you make an agenda for tomorrow’s meeting?” “are you going to write that report?” etc…
With the zillions of emails, we often wind up missing the response and get annoyed with each other. With RTM, we’re just checking things off and making notes in the list.
Next up, I’m going to convince my fellow managers to use RTM for our team projects.
I’ve finally started keeping up with everything on Remember the Milk. It’s been a huge help in preserving my sanity!
I have so much to do. I’m going to focus on this goal for a while as I think it will enable me to keep my sanity and thus reach some of my other goals too….
