working on it

I have contacted someone who is supposed to be teaching a watercolor class in my town sometime this winter. She had planned on already starting, but has been delayed. She has all my contact information, so I hope this comes to fruition soon.

My county does a night school program, and I was finally able to get into the watercolor class, after having been on the wait list last term. I’m hoping to discover my inner artist—and paint a few pictures of cute animals.

I am not an artist but love watching colors melt into each other with watercolors and have been fooling around with these fascinating paints at home. I would love to take a class and find out a little bit more….

i took a class with my father about 9 years ago. it was helpful both in learning more about the way colors mix, as well as technique specific to watercolor (and some nifty tricks!). i missed my last session of the class, unfortunately, and missed out on a lot (it was only four sessions long), but what i learned there has made me a stronger artist for sure!

And I feel a little sad that it’s over. As hard as it was in the beginning (with my unwillingness to risk failure), in the end I really loved that class. Not only that, but the improvements I’ve made in painting are clearly visible.
To anyone interested in exploring something different and challenging the way you see the world (literally!), I highly recommend taking an art class… especially watercolor. :)

This is a painting by one of my favorite watercolor artists, Turner. I saw him in an exhibit a few years ago. It was amazing..
Well, I’m starting to get the hang of this watercolor stuff. It helps that our instructor requires we work on a painting for at least three hours and he enforces that rule, too. If I get around to it and find the resources, I’ll even put one of my paintings on flickr so y’all can see ‘em. It’s sort of hard. I find that the most challenging part is starting the painting and knowing what to do… the next challenging is to actually use bold colors instead of shying away from that. I think this really speaks to my need to be right quite clearly. I am afraid to make a mistake, but this is something I need to let go of if I really want to work the painting and make it good. Overall, I’m really enjoying myself and I’m not as afraid of class as I was a little while ago.

This settles it, I’m going to add “stop being such a perfectionist” to my 43things. It’s ruining me… seriously!
At my watercolor class last night, I got totally discouraged because my teacher didn’t give me any complements… and I started seething because other people were doing better than me. It’s so stressful and silly… I know that… but it’s a problem I’ve always had. I’ll talk about it more in my entry for my new goal…
But, anyway, in this class, we just fooled around with black watercolor paint, exploring the color values and the affects of building color. It was pretty interesting and most of the work we did in class was free form, which was nice because it helped me get out some of the sadness I had from not being Miss Thang with a Paintbrush.

For our homework, we have to do a still-life in black and white. I’m pretty excited about that. I do much better when I can practice things by myself. I wish I could paint something like that there picture up there… but it’ll be years before I get that good!

The second class was good, we learned more about sketching with perspective and how to figure out the angles and placement of objects. I love learning this because it makes drawing things much easier, which is good! I can’t wait until we start painting.

Well, we just went over materials needed for the class and the first three classes are going to be spent sketching… but I really like the class so far. The teacher is great and I think this is going to be a really good experience.
