Lose – as in I want to “lose” blank pounds. Also works for lose that asshole friend of mine or did you lose your keys again? It’s not always something you wanted to lose, like a relative or your job, but it is always something that is no longer with you.
Loose – can still be with you. Maybe from the losing of said pounds your clothes are now loose or ill-fitting. Maybe you are tied up and need to get the knot loose to slip your hands out. I don’t know what you’re into. Or could be your partner or pet is on the loose and you need to lure them back home.
Both words have many different meanings, but none of those meanings cross over to include ones from the other word so unless you pushed the ‘o’ key too many times and your spelling/grammar check didn’t catch it there is little excuse for this type of error. Just check your work – I’ll try to check mine as well and the world will be a nicer place to spell in.

I can’t be winning this war as Virgin Mobile sent me an email to tell me to top up before a certain date or I would “loose my current credits”. It makes my heart ache.

i will freely admit that i am quite the spelling Nazi(for lack of a better word). it drives me absolutely crazy to read anything with spelling mistakes, especially signs for restaurants or in grocery stores. i’m not perfect by any means – for example i rarely use capitals and am addicted to the ellipsis(...), but i do try to read over the things i write before posting to be sure there aren’t any glaringly obvious spelling errors – like using the wrong there, their, they’re or putting an apostrophe in when it doesn’t belong. i understand typing can be tricky and it’s easy to get your letters backwards, but ‘loose’ vs. ‘lose’ is not something that i would consider as falling in to this category. i’m at a loss as to how to combat this seemingly worldwide problem and i know i’m not the only one who finds this error completely irritating, so if all of us spelling sticklers band together maybe we can come up with a way to get those people to stop typing “loose 10 pounds” or “wear loser fitting clothes”. and for the record: anyone who thinks “loose my virginity” is a good thing to have on their 43 things list is clearly not ready to have sex.
