How to apply for internships
How I did it: I am a procrasinator...so I literally filled out a form for a women's laboratory research internship at my school to fufill over summer. I submitted on the last day it could be handed in and wrote as honestly as possible to answer all the questions. In fact, I was so honest, I felt that the four possible slots (which had hundreds competing likely who had spent more effort, time, and thought into mature answers) would be filled already.
But, honesty and good recommendations from faculty can help a lot.
Lessons & tips: If I had not won this internship, I would have been in the same boat as many others at my university without anyone to do research with. The laboratory that accepted me over summer has trained me in many indispensable methods that I will use when I am a graduate student and in further research. In addition, I have been allowed to stay and work in the laboratory until ggraduation and have met an inspirational advanced grad student.
I would tell anyone that there is a chance for you to get an internship by being honest, sincere, dependable, and thoughtful. Seek out your professors, bosses, or anyone else who might improve your chances of success and know that you cannot always do it alone---but you can do it!!
