So i did some weeding today… not sure if that counts. I have been reading up on how to create rock gardens. We are going to do a nice rock garden in the corner of Esthers yard. I think it will look real pretty once its in.

I want to learn how to garden, then actually create a garden at my boyfriends house. my Grandad has one year left to live, and he is a great gardener, in the next year i am going to spend a lot of time with him, and also find out a lot from him.
I’ve been so busy trying to find jobs that I haven’t had the opportunity to spend time with my grandpa in the garden. I’ll hopefully help him harvest some here and there but as far as learning to actually garden, I’ll just have to wait until next year. Oh well =/
Once I finish up with all this DAMN stats homework, I’d like to spend some time with my grandpa in the garden learning stuff. I think gardening could be a pretty rewarding experience, not to mention saving some money on foods :) and less gas burned up transporting produce to the grocery store from god knows where (really enjoying this ecology class I’m taking, making me think about all the far reaching impact that our society’s habits have and how many of them can be reduced with simple changes to our lifestyle)

I have a pretty big yard that would look nice with some colorful flowers and plants.
I just decided to jump right in. My husband and I just dug up a chunk of our yard, roto-tilled it as much as we could, and have been pulling out rocks for 2 weeks. We need to put some better soil in – we’ve got sand & clay… But maybe we can plant in the fall to have a garden in teh spring!
Well – I’m not saying I learned, but I’ve defnintely started. Bought red, pink, purple and blue perennials and annuals, as well as tomatoes and herbs – dug up some weedy, grassy patches of dirt, and just got to planting. It’s not the easiest work – especially when you have a lot of rocks and roots in the soil. But after a couple of weeks it’s a pleasure to go outside on my patio and look at pretty flowers instead of yukky crabgrass.
The best part was working with my 18-year-old daughter – with no distractions. We just worked and talked – and that was lovely. Now it’s just maintenance work – a bit of weeding, a lot of watering, and keeping my fingers crossed that everything lives. :-)
Bought a hydrangea, a butterfly bush, and an apple blossom and planted these in the garden yesterday. The pansies and violas I will plant today. Bought these from a very good local garden centre which supplied us with lots of useful info on composting and when to plant out.
