How to go on an archaeological dig

go on many archeaological digs 3 weeks ago

As a youth i have been interested in history, it all started with paleontology when i feel in love with dinosaurs, not knowing nor caring much of the history of man, the history of me. then a 5 th grade teacher felt it was important to teach his students the important of the ancient world. Mr. Motley taught me and the rest of the “113 Fast Learners” (113 was our classroom number)that in order to know where your going, you must know who you are, and who you are falls from where you have been. he taught us the ancient world of the Aztecs, Eyptians/Kemets, the Mayans, and Incans. these lead me to learn the Hopi natives, Summerians, and many others of the olden. i found out a pro in these ancient worlds would be a archeaologist. I then gain an interest in psychology and gain the notion of “primitive (or pre-diluvial) thinking”

Step 1 - Find a dig 3 weeks ago

I did a little bit of searching around, and I came across this site: http://archaeology.about.com/od/currentdigs/Archaeology_Digs_2008.htm
Some of it is a bit outdated, but if you go to the individual dig’s website, it usually has updated dates for the next time out, prices, etc. Some of them count for 6 or 8 hours of college credit, too.
Now it’s just a matter of saving up the money for the dig fee and the plane ticket. Mabye I’ll combine a dig with a bit of backpacking. ^ I have a friend’s wedding in September of next year, so I’m shooting for 2011 so I have plenty of time to travel around when the dig is over. It’ll also give me plenty of time to save up the money I’ll need to travel about. ^

I sort of did this when I was younger. When I was 12, I told my Dad I wanted to be an archaeologist. My Dad, being the way he is, called around to some of the local universities, and arranged for me to go on a anthropological dig that was going on in the area. I spent the entire summer out there, and had a fantastic time.
I’d love to be able to do this again, maybe in the Middle East or the Mediterranean. I’m not quite sure how to go about this without being in a university archaeological program, but I’m sure there’s some way it can be done. ^^

SO WORTH IT. And if you are doing Biblical Archaeology, apply for the Biblical Archaeology Scholars’ scholarship. Fairly easy to get. I got it and it helped get me to Israel :)

I don’t major in archeaology or anything but I found an anthropology club at my university and they are going on a few digs that I’m considering. I use to want to be an archaeologist but chose nutrition instead. One of my favorite nutrition teachers actually majored in anthropology so maybe i can mix the two as well…

I want to major in archaeology at Yale—anyone have any good websites for expeditions—preferably for teens and adults alike, not just limited to experience and age above 17. Thanks!

i recently got back from an 18 day expedition dig in Idaho. my first one! it was tedious and the weather was completely dry, but i loved it! I was chosen for Earthwatch’s SCAP program, so it was all-expenses-paid and chock-full of archaeologist terms and bison bones. :) Not to mention, i got some insight into the field – which I am currently considering persuing. Overall, a great experience!

When I was seven years old, I wanted to be an archaeologist. The other kids in my neighborhood wanted to be cowboys, cops and firemen.

I took an intro course in archaeology in college, but found it rather disappointing because the professor insisted upon making it all about paleoindian archaeology, simply because the school is located in Oklahoma, whereas, I was more interested in European sites, especially those dealing with the Celts, Vikings and Anglo-Saxons.

Here’s a link to an online database of papyri…

Too bad most of them are in ancient Greek, but some of them are in English or Latin…
