I’ve done this a few times before and really liked it (though I was not given to public speaking). It’s different because it was my own writing and I knew how it was meant to be spoken. Very cool, especially with other people who also either read theirs or enjoy listening.
How to read my poetry in public
How I did it: i have been writing poetry off and on for about 9 years and i've always wanted to do an open mic night but kept putting it off. one day after my decision to change things about me, i decided... okay. it's time. i went and signed myself up, brought my notebook, stood in front of the mic and tried to pretend there was no one actually there.
Lessons & tips: don't overthink it! just do it. who cares what people think! this is for you and at the very least, that one person that connects with you because of it.

I host events called “Indie Chick Night” and to plug it, I write some amazing female-empowering poems.
They rock.
Two Neighbours
Both had grey shutters
that embraced warp’d glass pane.
The two houses stood side by side
closely flanked by fog.
In one I lived alone.
From dry brown rooms I stared
‘cross the alley to where you lived
warmly embalmed in the air of Chopin.
There you sat, calmly
listening to your rich mahogany stereo
slowly licking frozen yogurt off a spoon.
I gazed at condensed tears
weeping from the window pane.
It just doesn’t sound right when it is spoken…like I’m violating myself or something, or opening Pandora’s box…isn’t that odd?
