This book is proving to be a very long read. Whenever I see how thick it is, I remember why I stopped reading it in the first place.

However, Mr. Clavell’s Japanese epic is really helpful come bed time. I normally toss and turn before falling asleep, but after just 10 or 20 pages of this book, I immediately feel the need to snooze.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s a pretty good book. I love the story and the characters have dimension. It’s just that sometimes I get overwhelmed by so many details. But since I have this goal here, I’m making myself finish reading it.

And since I’m training myself to always find a bright side, I just have to say that sometimes this book can be the answer to the prayer of an insomniac weaning herself away from sleeping pills.

with “Death of a Darklord.” I have to admit that I would have enjoyed it more if I was a follower of the Ravenloft series, but sadly, I remember that the reason I bought this book was because it was written by Laurell K. Hamilton. Here’s the list of the books I’ve finished so far:

1. Atonement
2. Anansi Boys
3. Sacred Games
4. Living Next Door the the God of Love
5. The Traveller
6. Death of a Darklord

So right now, I’m going to start again with James Clavell’s “Shogun.” And I swear I’m going to finish it this time!

By the way, I love this goal. It helps me save money and it makes me appreciate my books more. It also helps me discover hidden gems from my groaning bookshelves.

Every payday, I always buy a book. I need to read everday. It’s an addiction. Up along the list with caffeine. But a month or so ago, I realized that there are more than probably 20 half-read books in my place. So, I’m telling myself to finish reading all of it first before buying a new book.

The only excpetion to this rule is if I find something that I’ve been wanting to read for a really, really long time.

I’ve already finished reading “The Traveller.” I’m now starting with Laurell K. Hamilton’s “Death of a Darklord.”

So here’s a list of the books that I’ve already finished:

1. Atonement
2. Anansi’s Boys
3. Sacred Games
4. Living Next Door to the God of Love
5. The Traveller

Only one more unread book in my bookshelf in the condo.

The Traveller 16 months ago

I’ve already started reading “The Traveller” by John Twelve Hawks. It has been sitting for more than a year on my bookshelf. Untouched.

I’m on Chapter 2, and this books is definitely turning into a very good read. I just wish I started earlier.

Update 16 months ago

I’m already finished with the Hard SF book. Now I’m going to tackle 3 more books that I haven’t finished reading that are gathering dust in my book shelf.

This goal is really helpful. Normally, whenever I go inside a bookstore, I do not go out without purchasing anything. Which wreaks havoc on my budget, and also makes me forget about the half finished books that are folornly waiting for my attention. Yesterday, when M and I were on our way to the groceries, we passed by one of my favorite bookstores. She asked me if I wanted to go inside, which shows that she knows me well enough by now. Anyway, it was like having an erectile dysfunction. The moment I pick up a book that I might want to buy, this goal flashed into my head along with a montage of all the half-finished books that I have yet to read. Sigh.

Oh... 16 months ago

Now that I’m reading this book again, I remembered another reason why I never got around to finishing it last year.

This book is hard SF. Whatever that is. I’m not really a fan of that genre. Moral of the story, don’t buy a book just because the title sounds cool.

Living Next Door to the God of Love 16 months ago

I remember buying this book last year because of its title. It totally intrigued me. But I had to shelve reading it because my grandmother and my father passed away on the same month that I bought it. I just couldn’t pick it up without being reminded of what happened.

Now that I’m finished with Bourdain’s book, I’ve decided to start reading this again. This time, hopefully, it wouldn’t be as painful.

I’m finished with Sacred Games by Vikram Chandra. All 900++ pages of it. It was a good book, but it could overwhelm you with too many details. And it’s not linear because it is told in different perspectives from different people in different times. All in all though, I’m glad I read it.

Uhm... 16 months ago

I sort of promised myself that I won’t be buying anymore books before I finished reading all of my own. However, last Saturday, I bought Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential. To my defense, I’ve been looking for a copy of this book for a long time.
