more then just a functional garden, I would like to design a flower and herbal walking path across an acre of my yard complete with bird baths, shaded benches, rock accessories and a mini water pond for koi

But my client is making the right noises again. It’ll just be the patio to start with (I’m going pergola), then the rest of the garden.

I was worried that my friend who’s asking me to design his garden was backing out, but it’s still going ahead in fact, which is excellent.
The only problem is he wants it doing on half at a time, which really buggers things up… oh well, that’s clients for you.

and now I have the chance. A friend of mine has asked me to design his garden, and I’m getting stuck right in. I’m a designer, but I’ve only ever really had the chance to do graphic and web design. I’ve always been really into architecture, gardens and that kind of thing though.
This garden is a long, thin urban garden. Needless to say, I’m doing a Zen garden… lots of rocks, moss and gravel, a small water feature and a Japanese lantern. It’s more complicated than I thought already… if it wasn’t for the internet, I wouldn’t be able to begin sourcing everything I need for it!
This is my work, so of course I have to say there’s no substitute for hiring a professional landscape designer. But there’s no reason you can’t do a great job yourself, with a little inspiration and guidance.
