I’ve read and heard many wonderful things about the Nahanni National Park and river and it is one of my life goals to experience it for myself. I am also lucky enough to share my name with this beautiful place!
I’ve done something like 30 wilderness canoe trips and this is definately one of the best. You feel almost like you are backpacking, the mountains are so close and amazing. There’s a good current on most of the river, so it’s a fairly easy paddle.
From Virginia Falls all the way to Nahanni Butte it’s just fabulous! Definately an adventure worth sharing with someone you care for. Take a camera!
Every country in the world has some unique and great thing going for it. France has the great wine-growing regions. Switzerland has the Alps. In Canada, we have the Canadian wilderness. There’s nothing like it anywhere else in the world.
I took my first canoe trip when I was 14, and fell in love with the wilderness experience. Since then, not a year has gone by without at least some brief foray into the great Canadian wilderness.
The Nahanni is the Everest of wilderness canoing. Before I die, I’d like to do the Nahanni.
I saw a documentary on tv about Pat and Rosemary Keough canoeing the Nahanni and fell in love with the location. One day, some time after that, I happened to be at a book store when they were there autographing copies of a book they had written about the Nahanni so I bought a copy and had them sign it. I think this travel goal will be expensive because the Nahanni is remote, so it may come after cheaper goals like biking in Europe.
